# The Incredible Tale of Space Debris Mistaken for an Alien Craft

Chapter 1: An Intriguing Inquiry
A subscriber posed a thought-provoking question: “Regarding the quest for extraterrestrial life, it seems scientists have yet to discover any definitive evidence of alien artifacts. Have there been moments when astronomers were uncertain whether they were observing a natural or artificial object?”
In general, astronomers prefer not to attribute unusual characteristics of celestial bodies to extraterrestrial civilizations, especially when logical explanations exist. This aligns with the principle known as Occam’s razor. However, there was indeed a moment when some astronomers briefly considered the possibility of an extraterrestrial source for a particular object—designated J002E3.
On September 3, 2002, amateur astronomer Bill Yeung spotted an unidentified object in Earth’s orbit while stargazing in the Pisces constellation. Through backward calculations of its trajectory, it was concluded that this object had entered Earth's orbit in April of that year and had completed its first revolution around the planet in August 2002, tracing a stretched elliptical path.
Astronomers found themselves perplexed. Aside from the Moon, there are very few stable objects in high orbits around Earth. Natural forces would either eject such an object from Earth's vicinity or result in a collision with the Moon or Earth itself. Everything suggested that J002E3 had mysteriously appeared in orbit.
A hypothesis quickly emerged, proposing that the object was a rocky asteroid approximately 30 meters long. However, this theory was soon dismissed. Researchers rapidly established that the unidentified object was constructed from refined aluminum and steel, coated with a highly reflective paint made from titanium dioxide.
This revelation led to a single, significant conclusion: the object was artificially created, indicating the presence of an intelligent species capable of developing advanced technologies for space exploration.
Astronomer Paul Chodas conducted detailed calculations to trace the object's origins by analyzing its trajectory. To his astonishment, he discovered that the object had been orbiting the Sun and had approached Earth around 30 years earlier, specifically towards the end of 1969 and the start of 1970.
This period was exhilarating for ufologists, as it seemed mainstream science was beginning to recognize the artificial nature of a celestial object. Many speculated that it could have been a communication from intelligent beings, a probe from another star system, or something similar.
However, the reality was far less mysterious. It was recalled that the Saturn V rockets employed by the U.S. for lunar missions were coated with titanium dioxide-based paint and primarily constructed from aluminum and steel.
It turned out that the enigmatic object that had momentarily baffled scientists was, in fact, the third stage of a Saturn V rocket—specifically, the third stage from Apollo 12. The third stages of subsequent Apollo missions were purposefully directed to crash into the Moon for seismic studies.
Interestingly, the initial plan was to send Apollo 12’s third stage into a solar orbit. However, a malfunction in the propellant control system thwarted this plan, leaving the stage within the Earth-Moon system.
Despite the malfunction not jeopardizing the mission's success, the mission control center paid little attention to it. Ultimately, Apollo 12’s third stage managed to enter solar orbit due to a gravitational maneuver as it passed near the Moon.
Decades later, after several solar orbits, it returned towards Earth. The Moon's gravitational influence slowed it down, allowing it to be recaptured by Earth's gravity. In June 2003, about a year after its discovery, the stage approached the Moon again, performed another gravitational maneuver, and returned to its solar orbit.
