Navigating Memory Challenges After a Stroke: A Parent's Journey

Chapter 1: A Sudden Wake-Up Call
It's astonishing how a seemingly trivial incident can shed light on what you've lost.
"Mum, Mum, COME QUICKLY!"
Hearing my daughters call for me with those words sends a wave of dread through my mind. Instantly, I envision the worst—blood, chaos, and perhaps even a disaster.
However, this time, I was the one at fault. I had begun running a bath for O and completely lost track of it. I didn’t even have a fleeting thought about it after turning on the tap.
Fortunately, O managed to catch it just before the bathroom floor became a swimming pool, sparing us from real damage. Yet, the true impact of my forgetfulness is felt within me.
Since my stroke in March, my short-term memory has been severely impaired. I find myself turning on the oven, only to forget it moments later, or starting a conversation and completely losing my train of thought.
The pattern is clear.
I know I should be thankful that things aren't worse, but it's still a harsh reality to confront: I can no longer recall even the little things.
And those little things do matter when they're forgotten.
This also affects my daughters, who have become more alert, stepping up to help me remember. They’ve taken on the roles of the brain cells I've lost.
Yet, I don’t want to conclude on a somber note; at least I still have stories to tell, and my body remembers to keep my heart beating and my legs moving.
If you’ve read this far, thank you! If you have any suggestions for coping during this challenging time, I’m eager to hear them.
For the love of all that is sacred, I can't afford to renovate my bathroom or kitchen right now.
Thanks again for taking the time to read my thoughts. If you found this enjoyable, feel free to show your support with a clap or a follow. Or don’t—there's no pressure!

With memory challenges, family dynamics inevitably shift. Daughters may take on more responsibilities, becoming both caretakers and reminders for their parents.
Chapter 2: Finding Humor in the Chaos
