Facing Discomfort: The Power of Asking for What You Deserve
Written on
Chapter 1: The Importance of Asking
Recently, I reached out to our previous tenants via email, requesting £196 to cover the expenses for chemicals and sealants we had to purchase to remove pet urine odors from our rental property. My husband doubted the effectiveness of this email, believing they would either ignore it or find it amusing. However, I felt compelled to make my case, regardless of their response.
I aimed to clarify the actions we took and seek reimbursement for the necessary treatments—it seemed only fair. We weren't trying to charge them for our efforts in resolving the issue. I held out a slim hope that they might repay us if I included the receipts for the supplies we had to buy. Regardless, I wanted to express my feelings about the situation.
To my surprise, when my husband checked our joint account the next morning, he found that the £196 had been deposited by our former tenants. Whether they acted out of concern for potential legal action or guilt, my strategy proved effective.
If you don't ask, you don't receive.
In my younger years, I often hesitated to ask for anything, having been conditioned to believe I was bothersome and should not impose. The thought of being a burden kept me from seeking what I wanted. However, as I matured, I began to challenge myself to step beyond my comfort zone, and yesterday was a prime example. I believed the tenants should compensate us for the issue they caused.
Perhaps my email struck a chord, prompting them to agree with my viewpoint. Regardless, it worked out.
There have been times when my husband was astonished by the results of my requests that pushed the boundaries of his comfort zone, and they often turned out favorably, just like today.
Reflecting on my past, I wish I had been bolder in asking for things when I was younger; it might have spared me considerable stress and emotional turmoil. While I can't alter the past, I can choose to be courageous and venture beyond my comfort zone in the future.
You never know what might transpire if you simply ask. The worst-case scenario is often just being ignored. But if you don’t ask, you’ll never discover the outcome.
As a teenager, I began occasionally stepping outside my comfort zone, particularly when something mattered deeply to me—like infatuation. I vividly recall asking a boy out at 15, only for him to dash away. My anxiety about how to approach him had built up, and when I finally asked, I regretted it after his rejection. However, had he accepted, the result would have been worth it.
When I was 24, I asked a coworker out, and to my delight, he agreed. We married the following year and recently celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary!
Taking risks by stepping outside my comfort zone has yielded positive outcomes at times. I doubt my husband would have seen me as a potential partner had I not made the first move. Sometimes, asking can lead to wonderful surprises!
If you don’t ask, you don’t receive. That’s a crucial lesson to remember!
