But wait — before you pull out that ridiculously long list of ambitions for the upcoming year, let’s take a step back and reconsider the entire resolution process. Remember, you are not defined by your past achievements or failures.

It's essential to clarify one thing: You are not a failure. Just because you didn't accomplish every goal from last year doesn't diminish your worth. Those unmarked boxes? They don't define you. Life is a wild ride full of unexpected twists and turns, leading us down paths we never anticipated. Yet, there is beauty in those detours; each one brings moments of joy and lessons learned. So does achieving success in one of the many side projects you've been working on, which might eventually allow you to leave your 9-to-5 job. But ask yourself: Is that what happiness looks like for you?

I have a friend who is an absolute go-getter, excelling in business and goal achievement. Each year, he sets ambitious targets. While it's impressive, I wonder at what cost? He is so focused on his business that he seems to have little room for genuine joy in his life. What’s the point of striving for achievements that lead to stress and no personal life? Why set ourselves up for a year of chasing unattainable dreams? Don’t misinterpret me; having goals is essential, and striving to enhance your life is commendable. What I advocate for is kindness toward ourselves. Let’s set achievable goals that emphasize our happiness.

We have all faced significant challenges. How about we ease the burden a little? Set realistic goals that foster self-esteem. Aim for the stars, or even the moon in a distant galaxy, but perhaps let’s not try to build a rocket overnight. Remember, goal-setting isn’t exclusive to New Year’s Eve; you can do it anytime, adjusting and refining as needed. I prefer to organize my goals by business quarters; it feels less daunting and more manageable for my ADHD brain.

So as we bid farewell to the past and greet the new, let’s change the game. Embrace life with flair and kindness. Treat your goals as cheerleaders rather than strict instructors.

And let’s celebrate the small victories. Did you drink an extra glass of water today? That’s amazing! Finally tackled that cluttered drawer? High five! These little achievements are the real champions.

For me, self-care this year extends beyond bubble baths and face masks (though those are delightful!). It involves establishing boundaries, saying no when necessary without guilt, and prioritizing my mental health. It's about being gentle with myself, acknowledging my efforts, and understanding that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed at times. Self-care can mean simply taking a shower and showing up to work, or it can manifest as cozy binge-watching sessions of the latest K-Drama in a blanket burrito, naps on the couch, or indulging in sleep-ins. Self-care encompasses whatever YOU need to ensure you’re looking after yourself in every possible way—not just the current you, but the future you as well. Everything you do daily is for the future you — and yes! Future-you is a real person!

As we step into this new chapter, let’s do so with more love for ourselves. Let’s be mindful of our needs, patient with our growth, and kind to our hearts. Let’s redefine success in a way that’s personal, attainable, and most importantly, fulfilling.
