Transforming My Life: Shedding 85+ Kilos and Finding Health
Written on
Chapter 1: The Turning Point
For the majority of my life, I grappled with weight and body image struggles. I was often labeled as the "heavyset guy" in social circles, and like many in that situation, I felt quite uncomfortable with it. About five years ago, I decided it was time to take action.
I explored countless diets, engaged in martial arts, and tried various exercise routines. While I occasionally managed to shed some pounds and felt a sense of achievement, the results were fleeting and often left me disappointed. The infamous YO-YO Effect was a constant companion; one moment of weakness could undo weeks of hard work.
After experiencing this cycle repeatedly, I finally recognized that I must have been approaching my health journey incorrectly. Through my transformation, I’ve come to understand that the real barrier was mental. Contrary to popular belief, achieving better health is less about physical changes and more about shifting one’s mindset.
Section 1.1: Rethinking Diet
Many believe that weight loss hinges on restrictive dieting. While a balanced diet can certainly assist, the word "diet" often carries a negative connotation—it feels like deprivation.
Instead of perceiving your food choices through the lens of dieting, view them as part of the nutrition that fuels the lifestyle you aspire to achieve. This mental shift makes resisting temptation easier. Rather than thinking, "I can’t have this because I’m dieting," you’ll start to see it as, "I choose not to eat this because it doesn’t support the person I want to become."
Subsection 1.1.1: A New Perspective
Section 1.2: Commitment Beyond the Gym
To truly transform, commitment must extend beyond workout sessions. The mindset of, "I exercised today, so I deserve a treat" creates an internal struggle that can hinder progress.
Recognizing that every choice impacts your overall journey is crucial. You have the option to either cultivate a healthy lifestyle or remain trapped in old, unhealthy habits.
Chapter 2: Environment and Influence
Changing your surroundings can significantly impact your mindset. From simple acts like storing sweets out of sight to seeking new experiences, altering your environment can reshape your perception of yourself.
When I relocated from Brazil to Portugal, I encountered an abundance of cheap junk food. Initially, I indulged in trying everything, but I quickly learned that most of it was just empty calories. Recognizing the need to prioritize my health, I stopped consuming unhealthy foods—not because of a diet, but because the future self I envisioned wouldn’t indulge in unhealthy habits.
Chapter 3: Building a Supportive Relationship with Yourself
Living alone can sometimes lead to feelings of isolation. Yet, the two constants in our lives are our body and mind. If we’re unhappy with either, we must take proactive steps to change.
True fitness isn’t merely about achieving a specific weight; it’s about embracing a sustainable lifestyle. Unlike other goals that have a finish line, your health journey is ongoing. You’re either actively working towards your best self or merely playing with your aspirations.
Before concluding, let’s talk about honesty. To pursue your goals effectively, you must be brutally honest with yourself about what you truly want. If you neglect your well-being, why should anyone else respect it?
The journey to your healthiest self begins with genuine self-respect and a commitment to change.
Remember to focus on the lifestyle you wish to lead, make conscious decisions, and nurture your only lifelong companions—your body and mind.
