The key reason my previous business attempts fell short was a lack of genuine passion. While I enjoyed crafting hats, the reality was that I couldn't produce enough to cover my bills. Writing, however, felt much more feasible. With modern technology, I can now dictate my ideas and have software transcribe them for me, which opens up exciting possibilities for the future.

My aspirations extend beyond being a novelist and online writer; I aim to guide aspiring writers through their creative journeys. My focus is on helping them confront their fears related to writing. I have personal experience with common challenges like procrastination and perfectionism, and I'm committed to sharing effective techniques to overcome these obstacles.

Many writing coaches exist, but my emphasis is on fear management. I specialize in aiding writers in battling issues like writer's block and imposter syndrome.

Identify a specific gap in the market that aligns with your writing. Provide value and fill that space with meaningful content.

Creating a Business Plan

Treat your writing business like any other: establish both short-term and long-term goals. What products will you offer, and what pricing will you set? For instance, if you aim to earn $1,000 monthly, determine the number of products needed. Selling eBooks at $10 requires 100 sales, while a $100 online course only needs 10 participants.

Focus on delivering value and pricing accordingly.

Building Your Brand Identity

As a naturally creative individual, I prioritize establishing a visual identity whenever I embark on a new project. For instance, I designed logos for my Medium publication and Substack newsletter. I predominantly utilize Canva for design and maintain consistent color schemes, primarily in shades of red, with occasional blue or black accents.

Setting Up Your Online Presence

With an associate's degree in information technology, I have a solid understanding of website creation. While my blog is still evolving, I recognize the importance of a content strategy before purchasing a domain. I aim to post weekly and have experienced significant engagement growth through consistent posting on LinkedIn.

To gauge visibility, I check analytics and even Google myself to see where I rank. Progress is being made, albeit slowly.

Monetizing Your Writing Skills

Despite occasional frustrations with platform changes, I believe Medium is an excellent starting point for new writers to practice and earn money. I sometimes assist friends and family with writing tasks, dabbling in ghostwriting, and I have a long-standing interest in copywriting.

I am currently working on several mini eBooks to expand my email list, with plans to transform one into a comprehensive course. Recognizing that people learn in diverse ways, I strive to offer varied learning materials to help others achieve their goals.

I have a multitude of fiction ideas in the pipeline, hoping to publish at least one novel annually for the next decade.

As an introvert, reaching out can be daunting, but I've learned to engage with those whose work I admire by providing thoughtful feedback. While some may not respond, persistence is key. When proposing collaboration, be specific about your ideas and intentions.

Managing Finances and Legalities

Growing up, I assisted my father with tracking his finances, which instilled valuable lessons in financial management. Additionally, my government career taught me about taxes relevant to self-employed individuals.

Protecting your intellectual property is crucial. While I don’t put copyright notices on every piece of content, I ensure that I have backups in place. Always credit others' work appropriately.

Plan for your business's growth. Consider your aspirations for the next year, three years, five years, and even a decade. Will you remain a solopreneur, or will you need help as your business expands?

Remember, you're responsible for every aspect of your business, so stay informed and involved in all processes.

I used to struggle with writer's block, but technology has transformed how I brainstorm ideas. I now plan my content months in advance and write when inspired. Though I occasionally face burnout, it usually lasts only a few days.
