Navigating Mental Health and Social Media: A Personal Journey

Chapter 1: Embracing Vulnerability
After years of hesitation, I finally decided to create a TikTok account to document my journey with mental health and share insights with others. However, just six months in, I found myself wanting to escape the platform.
I began sharing videos detailing my experience of tapering off antidepressants for the first time in over a decade. In those clips, I often appeared without makeup, dressed in oversized sweaters—my way of signaling that I was struggling and not focused on my appearance.
Despite my vulnerability, the reaction was unexpected; I received numerous messages from men, seemingly encouraged to reach out. It’s disheartening how society often interprets a woman’s openness about her mental health as an invitation for unsolicited attention, regardless of context.
This pervasive notion reflects a troubling reality: women frequently feel unsafe in their own space, constantly fearing harassment. The defensive demeanor some women adopt, often labeled as “resting b**** face,” serves as a protective barrier.
While it's easy to direct frustration toward these men, it's crucial to recognize that they are often conditioned to believe such behaviors are acceptable. This highlights a deeper issue—many men struggle with their own self-worth and loneliness, driving them to seek validation through attention, even inappropriately.
The journey toward healing is not one-sided. Although some women may still navigate their unhealed wounds, many are increasingly engaging in self-reflection and personal growth. This shift may explain why more men find themselves single; women are no longer tolerating disrespectful behavior.
Behind every unwanted advance often lies deep-seated issues of low self-esteem or isolation, leading some men to act out. I hope that as more individuals cultivate self-awareness, it inspires others to reflect on their own actions.
All of us, regardless of gender, must start examining the motivations behind our behaviors. It’s vital to consider how our actions impact others and to treat ourselves with kindness, ensuring we don't rush into assumptions about affection. Building this awareness will help us distinguish between genuine friendship and romantic interest.
