The capacity to articulate complex concepts distinctly sets humans apart from other intelligent beings. However, it appears we may have pushed this ability to its limits!
The ability to convey intricate ideas uniquely distinguishes humans from other intelligent beings. This remarkable skill has been pivotal in shaping every event caused by humans throughout history. The gradual enhancements in our communication abilities should be viewed as technological progress. Over time, this capability has grown exponentially. This is crucial, especially as we stand on the cusp of a significant technological growth surge.
The evolution of human communication can be assessed through two primary metrics: 1. Speed, which gauges how quickly an average person’s idea circulates; 2. Reach, which measures the number of people influenced by that idea.
Historically, both Speed and Reach of communication for the average individual have steadily increased. This is a fundamental trait of human existence.
Section 1.1: Historical Perspective on Speed and Reach
In the early days, it is said that extraterrestrial beings introduced magic mushrooms to primates, unlocking their higher consciousness. This led to the development of early languages by evolved humans. Suddenly, the communication speed of the average person was limited only by their speaking abilities, and their reach was constrained to how loudly they could express themselves. As time progressed, humans learned the art of storytelling. As Tyrion Lannister famously said, "There’s nothing in the world more powerful than a good story." Stories transcended time, enhancing our reach further.
The domestication of animals, particularly horses, accelerated the movement of ideas across greater distances, thus amplifying both Speed and Reach. This transition enabled societies to evolve from hunting-gathering groups to city-states, ultimately leading to the formation of dysfunctional governments and nations.
The advancement of technology and the enhancement of communication capabilities are deeply intertwined. Innovations such as the printing press, newspapers, telephones, radio, and television have significantly expedited the dissemination of ideas beyond previous limits. These technological breakthroughs have been more influential in the evolution of human civilization than any individual, religious, or governmental effort.
The substantial increase in Speed and Reach following the Industrial Revolution resulted in immense economic benefits, lifting countless people out of poverty. Yet, this era also witnessed some of the most appalling instances of human violence. As humanity refines its most crucial technology—communication—the power dynamics shift, disrupting established groups that once excelled in previous communication methods.

With the evolution of communication technologies in the 20th century, institutions such as government, media, corporations, and education became essential in shaping modern society. These "too big to fail" Traditional Institutions solidified their influence over various cultural aspects. However, as they brought global minds together, they inadvertently paved the way for the next phase of communication technology: the Internet.
The Internet has catalyzed the rise of Big Tech. Currently, much of the societal friction stems from Traditional Institutions resisting the advancements in communication brought on by Big Tech. Social networks and the infrastructure established by these companies have empowered the average individual’s ideas, eliminating the necessity to navigate the checks and balances of Traditional Institutions for broader reach. This shift inherently accelerates the speed of communication.
Chapter 2: The Future of Decentralized Communication
The dawn of the 21st century initiated an era of decentralization. Traditional institutions faced disruption from the Big Tech they had initially fostered. As the Internet becomes increasingly decentralized, it is likely that Big Tech will lose its cultural monopolies.
Future advancements may include constellations of satellites providing global coverage. The surplus computing capacity on devices like smartphones and Internet of Things gadgets will likely replace data centers, internet service providers, and centralized cloud computing systems. The infrastructure of Web 3 will enable more information than ever to populate the Internet, while what we now refer to as "cryptocurrencies" may evolve into application layers for secure, trustless communication.
It is conceivable that in the next decade, centralized giants like Google, Amazon, and major social networks could be superseded. The disruption of Traditional Institutions and Big Tech seems inevitable. Humanity must strive to reduce the friction arising from advancements in communication. The intervals between significant leaps in communication technology are shortening, leading to the increased likelihood of high-friction events occurring in close succession. It is essential for humans to be aware of their potentially destructive capabilities. Understanding the historical context and consequences of Speed and Reach will aid individuals in navigating this new era of hyper-connectivity, ideally fostering a culture that emphasizes friction reduction as technology progresses.

What if we apply this reasoning to predict future developments? We might find ourselves in virtual reality realms where ideas can be communicated with unprecedented clarity. Innovations like Neuralink could enable direct connections between human minds and the internet, facilitating instant sharing of complete thoughts. Will humanity enhance communication to the point of achieving a hive mind? When will progress halt, and how intense will the friction become with each advancement? We are already witnessing considerable global friction as humanity embarks on the transition to distributed communication and economic frameworks. In hindsight, these developments appear to have been unavoidable.
