Midjourney has recently introduced an innovative feature known as 'outpainting,' referred to as 'Zoom Out.' This technique enables users to expand the edges of an image beyond its initial size or aspect ratio, in contrast to cropping.

The new feature is easily accessible after you upscale an image, where you'll see 'zoom out' buttons positioned below. These options include Zoom Out 2x, Zoom Out 1.5x, and Custom Zoom, allowing for flexible adjustments to the image’s framing.

Chapter 2: Zooming Out Made Easy

Initially, the maximum zoom-out is set at 2x, but users can continue to zoom out further even after the image has been rendered. Below are examples showcasing multiple zoom-out levels:

The addition of the Custom Zoom feature is particularly exciting. It allows for aspect ratio adjustments, something that was previously not possible. Rather than simply outpainting to the same aspect, users can now set a new one, such as changing from a 1:1 ratio to a 3:1 ratio.

You can also modify it towards a vertical ratio, transforming 1:1 to 3:1.

Chapter 4: Considerations and Future Improvements

One downside of the new outpainting feature is that Midjourney currently does not maintain the original image's resolution. Instead, it scales down the original to accommodate the newly added pixels. This resolution issue is something I hope will be addressed in future updates.
