My Journey to Shed the Menopause Belly: A Personal Story
Written on
Chapter 1: Embracing Change
My husband and I reside in the sunny Southwest Florida, where we are fortunate to have wonderful friends. Recently, two of these friends joined us for a delightful three-day stay at our summer retreat on Georgian Bay in Ontario, Canada. After seeing them off at Toronto Pearson Airport, my husband and I returned to our summer home.
The couple is vibrant and health-conscious. The woman, a fellow pole dancer, is much more skilled than I am—she's at an advanced level while I’m still working on my intermediate techniques. Over the weekend, she dedicated hours to helping me perfect my pole moves. Thanks to her excellent teaching, I felt empowered and confident afterward.
She also serves as one of my instructors at the two studios I attend in Florida, where private lessons can cost around $80-$100. I was incredibly lucky to have received the equivalent of two complimentary sessions, which have been transformative for my pole dancing journey.
As she navigates menopause, she too has experienced the challenges of the menopause belly. Despite her strength as an advanced pole dancer, her eating habits were not ideal, which contributed to her struggle with this issue. However, she took proactive steps to change her lifestyle, significantly cutting out sugar, bread, frequent dining out, and alcohol.
Her commitment paid off, and she successfully eliminated her menopause belly in a relatively short time. Inspired by her determination, I am equally resolute in my quest to address my own.
Chapter 1.1: The Body Positivity Movement
The body positivity movement is widely embraced today, promoting acceptance of all body types. While I support this initiative, I believe it should not serve as an excuse for neglecting one’s health. Here in Canada, I don't perceive my stay as a vacation; I spend around four months here to escape the sweltering heat of Florida. However, many visitors indulge in vacation habits that include drinking and high-calorie foods.
At home in Florida, I typically reserve alcohol for weekends, but I have found myself breaking this rule while in Canada. I also tend to snack on calorie-dense foods like cheese and crackers, which I usually avoid. Although I enjoy the time spent with friends and family, these indulgences have consequences for my weight, even with regular exercise.
Research indicates that weight loss is predominantly influenced by diet, with estimates suggesting 80% diet and 20% exercise. While it’s not necessary to adhere strictly to this ratio, focusing on diet is crucial for effective weight loss.
Section 1.1.1: Strength Over Size
In the realm of pole dancing, size doesn't determine ability; strength is what matters. For instance, Roz The Diva is a well-known plus-size pole dancer who exemplifies this principle. Nevertheless, when I carry extra weight around my midsection, performing certain moves becomes more challenging.
Despite the body positivity movement's messages, I personally prefer to avoid having a menopause belly. At 62, I refuse to use my age as a crutch; I know I can take steps to lose the weight. Taking personal responsibility is essential for me, and I believe excuses have no place in this journey.
Chapter 2: A Plan for Change
"Today, be the badass girl you were too lazy to be yesterday." — Unknown
With this mindset, I am committed to reducing my caloric intake. While I won't eliminate all sugar and alcohol as my friend did—I've learned from experience—I will focus on moderation. It all boils down to the balance between calories consumed and calories burned, which isn’t complicated.
Today is July 16, 2024. I aim to return to my usual eating habits and continue exercising. By the end of August, I’m determined to eliminate my menopause belly. This goal is especially motivating as I have a pole performance scheduled for October 26 in Florida, where I will showcase my skills alongside other dancers.
Thank you for following my journey!
