The Importance of Perseverance: Why You Shouldn't Give Up

Chapter 1: Understanding the Struggle
If you've never faced the challenge of perseverance, this article might not resonate with you. However, for those of us who have grappled with the urge to give up, this brief read is particularly relevant.
Many of us recognize that chasing our aspirations often involves significant hurdles. Personally, I am deeply engaged in advocating for a society that values justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion for everyone. Yet, amidst this endeavor, I find myself increasingly disheartened by the rise of mass shootings, racial injustices, economic exploitation, and various other forms of oppression. This can make it tough to stay committed to the fight for what I believe in.
As an African American man, I am especially conscious of the struggles faced by myself, my ancestors, and my community in the quest for equality and justice against the pervasive impacts of anti-black racism. Like many who are entrenched in similar battles, I often feel fatigued and question the significance of my efforts.
In these trying moments, I remind myself of two crucial aspects: (1) my fundamental values and (2) my faith.
Section 1.1: The Role of Core Values
Identifying our core values is essential during tough times. These values represent our highest priorities and beliefs, providing clarity and focus as we navigate our struggles.
For instance, in discussions about gun control, I approach the topic through my core belief that "all life is valuable and deserves protection." Some opponents of gun control argue that any restrictions infringe upon the 2nd Amendment. However, their stance often reflects their underlying values rather than a straightforward reading of the Amendment.
Conversely, my core value leads me to prioritize collective well-being over individual rights, shaping my perspective on the debate. It's essential to recognize that the discourse surrounding gun control is fundamentally about differing core values rather than purely legal interpretations.

Section 1.2: The Impact of Faith
Understanding and articulating my core values helps me remain committed to my cause. When I feel the urge to surrender, it is my faith that keeps me engaged in this struggle. My interpretation of "faith" extends beyond religious beliefs; it embodies a commitment to living according to my core values.
For example, my belief in the inherent value of all life compels me to act in ways that reflect this commitment, regardless of external pressures or societal claims about individual rights.

Chapter 2: Living Out Our Values
My faith is consistently challenged, particularly regarding issues like anti-black racism. The question arises: how do I uphold my values in the face of hostility? This dilemma has historically troubled many leaders, including Martin Luther King, Jr., who believed that love is the antidote to hate.
King's teachings remind us that responding with love instead of hate is a commitment to our core values, even when faced with animosity. While I share King’s conviction, I often wrestle with the worthiness of my struggle to love those who may not reciprocate my care.
Struggling with the Struggle
Observing the indifference towards human welfare displayed by numerous leaders often leaves me questioning the value of my efforts to love and support those who do not extend the same courtesy to me. In these moments of doubt, faith becomes crucial.
Faith empowers me to recommit to my core values, even when the struggle seems overwhelming. It’s about adhering to a way of life that may often appear unjustifiable. Many people mistakenly use faith as an excuse to avoid grappling with difficult issues, seeking easy answers in religious or political texts instead of confronting their own responsibilities.
Ultimately, we must engage with the struggle, not shy away from it. My 30 years as an ordained minister have taught me that definitive answers are often elusive. Instead, we must seek understanding through our struggles.
The struggle is invaluable, my friends! Let’s not give up!
