Chapter 1: A Day of Unexpected Events
Have you ever found yourself in a situation so absurd it feels unreal? Imagine standing barefoot on a metal stepstool, about to unscrew a lit light bulb while water drips from above. Not exactly the brightest idea, right?
This particular escapade took place in Ohio, not far from Lake Erie. It all began quite innocently. I was home alone, gathering up some dirty towels (yes, thrilling, I know). Upon entering my teen's chaotic bathroom upstairs, I noticed a pink mold creeping in the tub. As any responsible mom would do, I decided to tackle the issue. I removed the handheld showerhead and gave it a good spray down.
So far, so good. But instead of placing the showerhead back in the tub, I carelessly hung it over the edge. At that moment, my adult ADHD kicked in, and I thought, "Why not wash the sheets while I'm at it?" I dashed out of the bathroom to strip the bed.
What I didn’t realize is that in those mere three minutes, the bathroom was transforming into a mini swimming pool. To emphasize, the water was OFF! Somehow, the showerhead had siphoned water from who knows where, possibly from Lake Erie itself—though I doubt that was the case.
After cleaning up the bathroom floor, I headed downstairs to the laundry room. This is where things took a turn for the worse. As I turned the corner into the kitchen, I felt water dripping on me from the ceiling, specifically from the kitchen light fixture.
Panic set in. How was I going to explain this to my husband? In a flash, I resorted to my usual tactic—hiding the evidence. I grabbed the metal stepstool, climbed to the top, and reached for the lit fixture.
Hold on a second. My inner science enthusiast kicked in—something about electricity, water, metal, and bare feet not mixing well. That was a close call; I could have ended up in quite the predicament.
I quickly jumped off the stepstool, turned off the light, and began mopping up the kitchen floor. For the next hour, I helplessly watched as the kitchen light continued to drip. By the time my husband returned home, three more water spots had appeared on the kitchen ceiling, all leaking.
He’s convinced the water was not off. I assure you, it absolutely was.
