Exciting Insights from the Speaker Roller Coaster Journey

Chapter 1: The Evolution of Scott Media Speakers
This week marks a significant point as I provide an update on the development of Scott Media Speakers, approaching our six-month milestone. Reflecting on the journey thus far feels akin to a thrilling roller coaster ride within the broader realm of small business.
The world of small and micro businesses often resembles a theme park, filled with various rides that promise excitement, joy, and a bit of fear!
As I delve into the learnings from Scott Media Speakers, the first observation revolves around the aspiring speakers and their unique approaches.
To support my retained clients and those in my training group, I offer this platform free of charge. For non-clients, a modest administrative fee of £10 plus VAT per month, or £100 plus VAT annually, is applied. In exchange, they gain access to my platform and receive a monthly social media boost, encouraging them to promote their presence. This initiative serves as a reminder of their speaking aspirations and showcases their expertise. While I remained flexible regarding clients' participation, I took the lead in determining their level based on mutual agreement centered on their personal and business objectives. That part was relatively straightforward.
During the setup phase, I encountered several individuals outside my client base who expressed interest in joining, willing to pay the fee. However, I declined several requests. Here’s what I heard:
- "For my £100, which companies will you approach on my behalf?" My response was clear: "None. This is about organic growth; I won't be soliciting for individual speakers with such a minimal fee."
- "I thought Tier 1 was the highest level; I believe I should be in that tier since I’ve done a TEDx." I explained, "This is my platform, and despite that achievement, I believe your speaking skills need enhancement." Consequently, that individual withdrew from consideration.
- "You should allow me onto the platform, even if you're at capacity, as I’m an excellent speaker." I reiterated, "This is my platform, and I have a maximum of 50 speakers to manage."
Once the platform launched, we received inquiries from potential speakers within the first week. Three have emerged as the most popular in the early months, all positioned in Tiers 3 and 4. This has prompted me to consider a more effective method of showcasing speakers beyond the tier system, but that’s a discussion for another time.
Numerous emails and messages have flooded in from those seeking speakers for free, even though it’s clearly stated that the featured speakers do not speak without compensation. In these instances, I’ve been upfront and directed them to speakers who might accept such gigs. However, many bookers seemed fixated on specific individuals and attempted to negotiate. One case involved a speaker traveling from Wiltshire to Exeter for a weekend engagement, requesting expenses. This experience taught me the importance of confidently saying "no."
I’m excited to share that I am currently in negotiations for three paid engagements for clients, with two already having received invoices to cover speaker costs. More details will follow soon.
Additionally, I’ve formalized a collaboration with another company, not based in Swindon, which seeks to utilize Scott Media Speakers for their clientele. This partnership will include a small commission for them, but all future negotiations will reflect this arrangement. The reality is that in business, fair margins are essential; it’s crucial to strike a balance and avoid greed.
Several speakers have left the platform over these six months as their tenure as retained clients concluded. As this platform adds value for them, the lack of exposure and my expertise comes at a cost once they are no longer clients. While this is disappointing, it’s a natural part of any business cycle, creating opportunities for new clients—one of whom is joining us next month!
As I've mentioned, the business landscape is a roller coaster ride, full of unpredictability, yet never dull! If you're in search of a speaker, I encourage you to explore my roster and reach out if any particular individual catches your interest.
