Embracing My Secret Writing Journey: The Art of Discretion

Chapter 1: The Hidden Hustle
Writing has become a personal endeavor for me, one I choose to keep under wraps. Initially, I shared my passion with family, eager for their feedback on my stories. However, as is often the case, those whose opinions matter most can serve as both supportive allies and harsh critics. Since then, they haven't inquired about my writing, leaving me to pursue it quietly and diligently.
I engage with the writing community on platforms like Medium, where I read, comment, and follow other writers. Many suggest leveraging LinkedIn and Twitter to enhance visibility, but that approach doesn’t resonate with me—not at this moment, and perhaps not ever. I find comfort in the anonymity of my current audience.
This video explores the delicate balance of maintaining a side hustle without jeopardizing your primary employment.
What would my extensive professional network think if they discovered I was reinventing myself as a writer? Revealing personal stories about my struggles, aspirations, and setbacks feels too vulnerable to share with colleagues.
My workplace is predominantly male and quite traditional. If my stories came to light, they would alter how I am viewed, making me more transparent than I am comfortable with. Some things are best kept private.
It would be a different scenario if I were to position myself as an authority in Leadership or Coaching, but I am not seeking to promote myself as a consultant or motivational speaker. A friend of mine recently published her second book on a topic she is deeply passionate about and has started receiving invitations to speak at various events. She invested significant effort to transform her side hustle into a thriving business, but that required her to expose herself to her network of peers and past colleagues. Had it not succeeded, she would have faced scrutiny. I admire her bravery in taking that leap.
It might also feel more straightforward if I were a fiction writer or a poet, letting my creativity flow freely onto the page. I envy those who can unleash their imagination and share their work proudly.
For now, my writing will remain a secret, a private journey with you as my only audience. This way, I can remain unnoticed and free from criticism until I feel accomplished enough to call myself 'A Writer' in front of those I know.
Until then, I will keep this passion hidden for fear of judgment.
