Many of my patients and acquaintances have faced colon or rectal cancer that has metastasized to distant organs like the liver and lungs. This article proposes a hypothesis that could potentially alter my perspective on my daily caffeine habit.

Coffee and Colorectal Cancer Research

A recent study involving 1,719 participants diagnosed with stages I to III colon or rectal cancer has shed light on coffee's potential benefits. The researchers tracked these individuals during and after treatment.

To gauge coffee intake, participants completed a detailed food-frequency questionnaire.

Key Findings from the Study

After an average follow-up of 6.6 years, the study revealed that consuming more than four cups of coffee daily was linked to a 32% decrease in the risk of colorectal cancer recurrence compared to those who had less than two cups a day.

Furthermore, drinking three to five cups daily was associated with a lower mortality risk.

My Perspective

Although the study is observational and doesn't establish definitive proof, it aligns with the understanding that coffee contains various compounds with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-cancer effects. Given that colon cancer often spreads to the liver, coffee’s ability to enhance liver function may also be beneficial. Additionally, coffee promotes better bowel motility.
