How to Gain Clarity on Your Life's True Aspirations

Written on

Chapter 1: Embrace Your Inner Truth

“Clear your mind, let your emotions flow, and your heart will become a vibrant channel for the life energy within you.” — Neale Donald Walsch

The philosopher Søren Kierkegaard once stated that life isn't just a puzzle to solve; it’s a mystery to be experienced. This perspective opens up a rich reality for those willing to accept it.

At the core of many self-help philosophies lies the idea of relinquishing the need to control outcomes. The desire for control is often a mere illusion, as our influence over events is limited.

But beneath this urge for control may lie a deeper need for security. It's commonly believed that what we desire is at odds with what we truly need. Upon reflection, we see that our true desires are often clouded by past conditioning aimed at preserving our sense of safety.

A quick glance at the news reveals how little control we truly have over the unfolding events in our lives. Neuroscience shows that our nervous system takes about 300 milliseconds to respond, indicating a constant updating of our working memory. At around 500 milliseconds, we begin to process what we are experiencing for the first time.

In terms of free will, our minds are often a step ahead of our physical impulses before we decide to act.

So, how does this insight help us achieve clarity about what truly matters? Our minds frequently pull us in various directions. To uncover the essence of our existence, we must let go of our self-created narratives and allow our inner truth to surface.

However, discarding long-held beliefs can feel as painful as wasting money for many individuals. To reach clarity, we need to connect with our core selves, which inherently know the best paths to pursue, revealing our truths along the way.

Dr. David Hawkins, a notable consciousness researcher, emphasized the importance of discovering and living one's truth. Embracing our truth may not always align with others' expectations, and it can even provoke annoyance. Yet, to support a skewed perception of reality to please others is detrimental to our growth.

When feeling torn in multiple directions, it’s helpful to reassess your purpose. Do you wish to chase your deepest desires, or will you let others dictate your life and live inauthentically? The choice is yours—one path nourishes your highest potential, while the other leads to stagnation.

Chapter 2: Discovering What Truly Matters

“Nothing becomes real until it is experienced.” — John Keats

Ultimately, we should strive to live our calling and truth as much as circumstances allow.

This doesn’t mean we won’t face challenges that test our resolve. Recognizing that life is a mystery to be experienced, we can trust that as long as we take daily steps toward our goals, we are progressing in the right direction.

Life offers no guarantees. Clarity emerges when we focus our inner compass on our true longings rather than waiting for external factors to shape our destinies. Many people perceive life as happening to them instead of being lived through them. This mindset diminishes their personal power.

Life beckons us to take meaningful actions, aligning them with the right opportunities that propel us forward.

The Determinist perspective posits that life operates within a self-organizing framework. My experiences have taught me to remain alert to the signs and symbols that manifest in my life.

These signs can guide us to tap into our inner wisdom and adjust our course when we stray from our intended path. Have you observed similar patterns in your life? Do you take note of them or dismiss them as mere coincidences?

Within those symbols and messages lie answers to our deepest inquiries. To uncover what matters most, we must live the questions we pose. What once seemed vital may merely represent an incomplete understanding of reality, steering us in a direction we did not choose.

We can either let our troubles lead us or take charge with our solutions. The latter allows us to discover our own guiding star, as author Martha Beck discusses in her writings. Allowing life to dictate our choices hinders our ability to live authentically.

Authenticity is the truest freedom granted to us from the moment of our birth. It’s a blank slate, free of conditions, if only we embrace it fully.

With this understanding, I encourage you to dedicate time to journal about what genuinely inspires you. This is a journey, and immediate answers are unlikely. It requires a deep exploration within.

Give yourself the gift of time to reflect on what arises during the journaling process. I assure you, this method has proven effective for me and my coaching clients.

Returning to Kierkegaard’s insights, we must embrace life’s mysteries through experience. Only then can we attain clarity regarding what truly matters amidst our pursuit of excellence.
