Chapter 1: The Reality of Dreams

Over the weekend, I witnessed something quite disheartening. My dear friend Mark held a gallery exhibition for his artwork, which was genuinely impressive. He has devoted two decades to perfecting his craft. However, the venue felt less like a gallery and more like a makeshift display in a rundown shop. The owner expected to take half of any sales, but the turnout was dismal—only my eight-year-old son and I were present.

In Western society, we often grapple with the notion of exceptionalism, believing we are unique and must achieve greatness. I aspired to be a rock star, while Mark pursued his path as an artist, and another friend aimed to be a successful entrepreneur. This youthful drive, while inspiring, can sometimes lead us to set our sights too high, resulting in a tumultuous journey filled with anxiety and arrogance that may alienate those who care for us, ultimately leaving us feeling lost.

Another friend, Daryl, had a different journey shaped by hardship. After his parents divorced during his teenage years, he faced a rough patch living with a stepfather and stepbrother he despised. His biological father became distant, neglecting his own well-being. In search of solace, Daryl found a friend whose parents welcomed him into their home. This friendship introduced him to a world of art, music, and philosophy, providing an escape from the confines of suburban life.

Over the course of a year, Daryl transformed dramatically. His athletic wardrobe was replaced with vibrant, artistic attire, and he even adopted a new name. He committed to becoming a bohemian artist, excelling in his studies with top grades and pursuing further education in art.

However, he eventually faced the inevitable crossroads that many encounter after years of education: the daunting reality of adulthood. Unlike some of his peers, Daryl took the plunge into the art scene, living in a tiny flat in London, struggling financially, but immersing himself in the vibrant world of galleries, parties, and creative exploration.

While he embodied the bohemian lifestyle, it also exposed him to detrimental habits that could jeopardize his artistic aspirations—excessive drinking, drug use, and a disregard for structure and stability. As time passed, his initial confidence began to fade, giving way to cynicism and anxiety, which evolved into depression.

Daryl found support in a partner who cared for him and attempted to curb his more self-destructive tendencies. She has been a stabilizing force in his life, but perhaps by managing their finances during a crucial decade, she inadvertently allowed him to avoid confronting his personal growth. Now nearing 40, Daryl finds himself delivering groceries to make ends meet while trying to juggle his art. Frustrated with his situation, he contemplates training to become a teacher, recognizing that having a steady income and fulfilling family responsibilities are essential—not antithetical to his artistic journey.

The Mistake Many Make

Daryl fully embraced the mantra of pursuing dreams and allowing passion to guide his identity as an artist. While this approach is often romanticized, it could have worked under specific circumstances: if he had substantial financial backing, achieved early success (which can be perilous for a young, impressionable mind), or found a benefactor to support him.

However, these fortunate conditions did not apply to him and are unlikely to be the reality for many aspiring artists. Gustave Flaubert, the author of "Madame Bovary," famously stated that one cannot lead a conventional life and also be an artist. He argued that this "hybrid" existence leads to a distorted view of life. Daryl's mindset reflected this belief in his 20s and 30s; he thought that unwavering faith in his artistry was crucial despite mounting evidence suggesting otherwise.

At his recent exhibition, Daryl was consumed by alcohol and despair. Despite his art reaching new heights, the turnout was the least successful he had ever experienced. Following a disagreement with his wife and child, he found himself drowning his sorrows instead of focusing on a path to stability.

Flaubert had the privilege of financial security, allowing him to pursue his art without the burden of work. In today's digital age, however, many can alleviate stress and trauma by developing a practical career plan alongside their artistic ambitions while also nurturing personal growth, habits, and relationships. That’s what Daryl is striving to achieve now, as many of us seek to balance our dreams with reality.

Ultimately, Daryl's belief in his artistic vision was genuine, but he wishes he had fortified it with healthy habits, a steady income, and a sense of self-worth. Embracing these aspects is not selling out; it’s strategically playing the long game for success.
