Initially, I was doubtful about the value of prompts. Thoughts raced through my mind—did I truly need assistance with my ideas? I already had plenty! Would engaging with prompts genuinely contribute to my growth, or would it be a fruitless endeavor? What if I disliked the prompt? How does one even approach prompts? What if I struggle to generate ideas?
Ultimately, these concerns were unfounded. Once I began engaging with prompts, my perspective shifted dramatically.
Addressing Common Concerns
Do I really need help with ideas? I have so many anyway! — There's no limit to the number of ideas you can gather. You’ll naturally gravitate towards what intrigues you. However, without seeking inspiration from diverse sources, your writing can become stagnant.
Will this truly help or is it a waste of time? — By drawing inspiration from various sources, prompts only enhance your creative reservoir.
What if I don’t like the prompt? What if I can’t think of anything related? — That’s perfectly okay! There’s a wealth of prompts available, allowing you the freedom to select what resonates with you. I do encourage stepping outside your comfort zone and exploring new avenues!
How do I even start with prompts? — No worries! Let’s dive into that!
Examples of Prompts and Their Execution
Imagine a prompt like: “Within the dark of her heart…” It can lead to multiple interpretations:
- Negative — The darkness may symbolize despair, harboring monsters or profound pain.
- Positive — Alternatively, that darkness could represent a sanctuary where she nurtures her dreams, awaiting someone to illuminate her life.
- External Forces — She might be trapped in her heart, with a wizard stealing her essence while she weeps unseen tears.
Prompts are designed to INSPIRE and DIRECT your creativity, focusing it on a specific idea. The duration of your engagement with this concept is entirely up to you, unless limited by a word count.
Let’s take these ideas and create distinct narratives from a single prompt.
Within the Dark of Her Heart — Blood Red Avalanche
I begin with a vague notion of where I want this prompt to lead.
At times, events occur so abruptly that they rattle you to your core. Fear about what comes next can alter your entire perception. How does it feel? What do you see? What scents fill the air? When something shakes you deeply, it lingers.
Then, I expand the idea, adding creative details.
Have you ever experienced an internal rupture? Physically, it’s the sound of bones cracking, a slow-motion injury accompanied by the metallic scent of blood. Emotionally, it mimics that horror, tapering off into recovery. When it’s an internal struggle, the sensations are eerily similar.
The scent of tears—bitter and burning—traces a path down your cheeks, leaving traces on your eyelids. It’s mourning, grief, death. Experiencing this transforms you.
Within the Dark of Her Heart — Of Gardens and Dreams
I begin with a rough concept of how I want the prompt to unfold.
She cultivates the garden of her heart, deep in the soil, caring for what she grows. Darkness brings invasive weeds, recognizable by their thorns and the sharp scent that assaults her senses. They’re unwanted, as she desires only beauty, anticipating a special someone. Hidden in that darkness lies a seed, nourished by the moisture of her dreams, awaiting light and warmth.
Then, I elaborate on this idea, enriching it with details.
Deep in the soil, her arms are enveloped by rich earth as she nurtures her heart's garden. In this shadowy space, she hunts for weeds, identifiable by their prickly nature and the sharp odor that stings her when she touches them.
These weeds must be discarded; they have no place in her sanctuary. She seeks beauty, dreaming of the day when her love arrives to illuminate her heart. Until then, seeds lie dormant, feeding on the moisture of her aspirations, patiently waiting in the dark.
Within the Dark of Her Heart — The Slumbering Death
I start with a basic idea about the wizard draining the woman’s soul. What does he perceive? What motivates him? Is she on the brink of death?
Next, I expand this concept creatively.
Her chest rises and falls so slowly that it’s difficult to tell if she’s alive. Yet, the wizard feels her essence flickering between consciousness and slumber. He hears her silent screams, although her face remains serene.
With a flick of his wrist, he casts spells, dark mist cascading over her. As it envelops her, an echo of her internal scream resonates within the dim chamber.
“Don’t fret, my dear. It won’t be long,” the wizened wizard murmurs, his eyes clouded yet bright. “
