Understanding Privilege in Our Lives: A Stoic Perspective

Chapter 1: The Reality of Unequal Experiences
In the context of the Daily Stoic Meditation for July 28, titled "Check Your Privilege," Ryan Holiday draws insights from his acclaimed work, 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance and the Art of Living.
"Some individuals exhibit sharp intellects while others may seem dull; some are nurtured in supportive environments, while others face challenges. Those from less favorable circumstances often need additional guidance and thoughtful instruction to grasp these teachings and evolve — similar to how individuals in poor health require significant care to regain vitality." — MUSONIUS RUFUS, LECTURES, 1.1.33–1.3.1–3.
Life presents varied challenges for different people. This may sound self-evident, yet it’s crucial to acknowledge. Our backgrounds, family situations, and life experiences differ widely. Some individuals may enjoy stability, love, and enriching childhoods, benefiting from education and opportunities. Conversely, others may not share the same fortune.
It's essential to recognize that not everyone shares the same advantages you do. Reflect on your own experiences — you might have had access to resources like books, online courses, or a supportive community, while others may not be so fortunate.
Take a moment to contemplate your privilege.
You could have a network of encouraging friends or a nurturing family, while many individuals face life's challenges alone. You might enjoy access to healthy food and fitness facilities, yet others lack these basic necessities.
Regularly meditate on your privileges and practice gratitude.
Growing Together with Others
For those who haven't experienced the same advantages in life, it's vital to make a concerted effort to support their growth.
As Musonius suggests in the earlier quote, those who come from less favorable backgrounds may require more evidence and thoughtful mentorship to fully engage with these teachings. They need your kindness, understanding, and encouragement to flourish.
Be compassionate, offer your support, and share your knowledge and experiences.
Bringing It All Together
Life is not equally challenging for everyone. Make a deliberate effort to grow alongside others and uplift those who may not have had the same opportunities.
The first video, "Check Your Privilege," discusses how recognizing one's advantages can lead to greater empathy and understanding for those less fortunate.
The second video, "Woman's viral 'Check Your Privilege' challenge is opening people's eyes | GMA Digital," showcases how this concept is becoming more recognized and discussed within society, encouraging self-reflection and awareness.
