Top 3 TV Shows for Programmers to Enjoy Instead of Netflix

Chapter 1: Engaging Alternatives to Netflix
When I'm not immersed in coding, I often find myself in front of the TV screen, resisting the allure of the latest Netflix shows. Instead, I opt for series that not only entertain but also provide insights into the tech world, startup journeys, and hacker culture. Unfortunately, many Hollywood productions fall short in these areas. Hence, I choose to revisit these three outstanding TV shows instead.
Section 1.1: Silicon Valley
This comedic series offers a humorous take on the tech scene in Silicon Valley, the hub of innovation and technology. Beyond the laughs, it effectively portrays the challenges faced by a tech startup, from app development and company registration to securing funding and launching a product while striving to thrive against industry giants.
In this narrative, Richard Hendricks, a talented coder, develops an app named Pied Piper, showcasing an impressive data compression algorithm. As the episodes unfold, you'll discover that the coding phase is merely the beginning of the journey.
Spoiler alert: If you've ever dreamed of making it in Silicon Valley, either by working at a major tech firm or launching your own startup, this show is a must-watch, packed with both education and humor.
Reflecting on my initial viewing, I had no coding experience at the time. Now, as an instructor, I can affirm that while the show didn’t directly inspire me to code, it certainly opened my eyes to the tech landscape.
Section 1.2: The Dropout
Have you heard of Elizabeth Holmes? She was the CEO of Theranos, a health tech startup that claimed to revolutionize blood testing and was valued at around $9 billion at its peak. Elizabeth became the youngest self-made female billionaire, often likened to Steve Jobs. However, everything unraveled, and in 2022, she was convicted of multiple fraud charges.
The Dropout chronicles Elizabeth's rise and fall, detailing her journey from Stanford to the eventual collapse of Theranos. While similar to Silicon Valley in its depiction of entrepreneurship, The Dropout delves into the darker aspects of startup culture.
In summary, this series teaches us crucial lessons about what pitfalls to avoid when launching a startup.
Section 1.3: Mr. Robot
If startups aren’t your focus, but you’re intrigued by hacker culture, Mr. Robot is the show for you. This thriller features Rami Malek as Elliot Alderson, a cybersecurity expert who moonlights as a cyber-vigilante, targeting wrongdoers through hacking. Elliot is soon enlisted by "Mr. Robot" to join a collective of hacktivists known as "fsociety."
Their mission is audacious: to erase all debt records by encrypting the financial data of the world’s largest conglomerate. This series presents a gripping look at the life of a hacker in New York and the consequences of challenging the elite.
That wraps up my short list! While I don't watch television frequently, I welcome your recommendations in the comments. Interested in Python? Join my Discord community to connect with fellow learners and receive assistance from experts.
