Crafting Tailored Strategies: Why One Size Never Fits All

Written on

Understanding Marketing Diversity

For over two decades, I've been discussing the pitfalls of searching for a one-size-fits-all solution. In today's world, there's a pervasive desire for instant fixes, but the reality is that both in business and life, complexities abound.

During a brief stint in the executive search industry four decades ago, I met an individual who thrived as an executive recruiter. This person, whom we’ll refer to as Jack, was deeply committed to his work. His firm was small, employing just six people, yet he catered to some of the most prominent companies in the Twin Cities.

When I dropped by his office, I often found him in grey sweatpants, sneakers, and a well-worn T-shirt—an informal look for someone so successful. His daily routine involved extensive phone calls and sifting through countless business magazines to identify potential candidates. Remarkably, he maintained a highly organized filing system that included meticulous cross-referencing, long before the advent of modern computer databases. His dedication to the craft allowed him to earn significant commissions through successful placements.

One memorable visit had me taken aback when I found Jack dressed in a tuxedo. "Wow! You look sharp today. What's the occasion?" I asked. Jack explained he was preparing to meet with a VP from Honeywell to discuss his failure to secure a replacement for a key retiring scientist. The retiring individual had given an 18-month notice, understanding the specialized nature of his role and the challenges in finding a suitable successor.

Jack had received a hefty advance payment to find a replacement within that timeframe. However, with only 178 qualified candidates worldwide—many of whom were not based in the U.S.—his task was daunting. He not only had to locate a potential candidate but also persuade them and their family to relocate to Minnesota. Given that many families were well-established in their current communities, the prospect of moving to a place with harsh winters added another layer of difficulty.

This example starkly contrasts with an experience I had in Duluth a few years later. After moving there in the spring of 1986 without a job lined up, I was optimistic about securing a writing position. Despite the lingering effects of the Reagan recession, I believed skilled writers would either be employed or have migrated to the recovering Twin Cities.

One day, a newspaper headline caught my eye: a new paper mill in West Duluth was hiring for 100 positions, with over 12,000 applicants from across the region.

Reflecting on both scenarios, it's clear that while both companies sought to fill roles, their strategies differed significantly. The paper mill's approach resembled that of seasoned fishermen casting nets to capture schools of fish, whereas Jack's task involved locating a single candidate, enticing them, and then reeling them in, akin to the struggle depicted in Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea."

As the saying goes, “different strokes for different folks.”

A friend from high school once established an executive training firm that draws lessons from Civil War battlefields and illustrates their relevance to business. Each battlefield presents unique challenges, dictating different strategies for victory. General Grant's triumph at Vicksburg, for instance, required a distinct approach compared to what was necessary to conclude the war in Virginia.

What about your current situation? Are you in the process of formulating a strategic plan, or are you executing one? Whether you're promoting a book or seeking to expand your market share, numerous paths can lead to success. Remember, “the right way is the way that works.” If you’re still exploring options, I hope you discover the strategy that suits your needs.
