# Social Media Metrics Distort My Writing Perspective

Written on

Chapter 1: The Challenge of Measuring Writing Success

In today's digital landscape, it's clear that some form of "progress" or "effectiveness" tracking is necessary. However, relying on social media metrics to gauge this is fundamentally flawed.

The number of views a LinkedIn post receives has little correlation with the quality or thoughtfulness of my writing. I've crafted profound pieces that went unnoticed, while mediocre content garnered significant attention. The statistics often reflect the whims of an inscrutable algorithm—some weeks, everything I post is highlighted, while other times, it feels as if I’ve vanished from the platform.

Many individuals dedicate their careers to deciphering these algorithms, but that's not how I want to invest my time or resources. My primary goal is simply to write and ensure that my work is accessible to readers.

Even on platforms like Medium, the metrics fail to capture the true "effectiveness" of my writing. My aim is to forge connections with readers, to provide value, and to create meaning for others. Unfortunately, "views" and "audience stats" are inadequate indicators of that.

Section 1.1: The Impact of Boosting on Visibility

Take, for example, the concept of "boosting." When one of my essays gets a boost, it receives a surge in views. But does that mean it is better written or more insightful? Not at all; it merely indicates that the Medium team chose to amplify its visibility. They've highlighted some of my more mundane pieces as well.

This inconsistency also leads to significant fluctuations in my income from Medium, varying from month to month. Occasionally, an essay might earn a decent amount (around $150), while at other times, it barely generates any revenue. The sheer volume of essays I produce has little bearing on my monthly earnings.

Yet, I occasionally find myself caught up in the statistical whirlwind. I question why my views are declining or why my income is lower than expected.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Emotional Toll of Statistics

I start to doubt the significance of my writing or worry that it isn't having the desired impact. When I let these fears spiral out of control, the outlook becomes increasingly disheartening. I've been experiencing this recently, and it’s detrimental. It distracts me from the core reasons I write: for enjoyment, for clarity, and for personal growth.

My writing embodies many facets, and statistics obscure my ability to appreciate that reality. They distort my perception and undermine the very qualities that contribute to my effectiveness as a writer.

Chapter 2: Reclaiming the Joy of Writing

In light of these challenges, it's vital to refocus on the intrinsic value of writing. If you're interested in exploring more about my journey, consider subscribing to my FUNletter or checking out my books, starting with Life as a Late-Identified Autistic.
