Secrets to Building a Lasting Reading Habit for Success

Chapter 1: The Importance of a Reading Habit
Are you eager to read more but feel that life's demands are holding you back? The truth is, it’s not life that’s obstructing you; it’s often your mindset. The key to achieving success in reading—and any other pursuit—is straightforward: just begin!
If your goal is to read more, then make reading a priority. Similarly, if you aspire to be a writer, then write; if you want to be a chef, you have to cook! Success lies in the actions you take, the failures you encounter, and the lessons learned from both your experiences and those of others. By reading, you can gain invaluable insights from others’ journeys.
Since you’re engaging with this content, it’s likely that you wish to develop a sustainable reading habit. Reading is a practice embraced by many successful individuals.
A 30-Day Reading Challenge
Over the next month, let’s work together to establish a consistent reading routine. I challenge you to read at least a chapter from a book each day or explore 10 to 20 articles on Medium. Are you ready to take this challenge? For me, reading has become a natural habit developed over several years, during which I’ve managed to read between 50 to 100+ books annually.
While this number might seem daunting, I don’t fixate on the quantity. My approach is simple: I focus on enjoying the process of reading, taking it one page at a time. My daily goal is to read at least 10 Medium articles and a chapter or two from a book. Join me in prioritizing reading for the next 30 days—you never know the opportunities this could create for you!
5 Steps to Establishing a Sustainable Reading Habit
#### 1. Embrace the Kaizen Method
The first step in forming any habit is simply to begin. Starting is often the most challenging part. You might be amazed at how impactful just one minute of focused reading can be. The Kaizen approach emphasizes the importance of concentrated effort, even if it’s for a brief moment. One minute can easily extend to two and beyond. Forming new habits doesn’t always require motivation; sometimes, it’s just about the discipline to start.
#### 2. Rise a Bit Earlier
I'm not suggesting you join the 5 AM club, but consider waking up slightly earlier than usual. Instead of grabbing your phone first thing, reach for a book instead. Dedicate some quiet morning time to yourself.
#### 3. Read Without Interruptions
Set aside specific time each day for uninterrupted reading. We are given 1,440 minutes each day—make sure to invest that time wisely. Eliminate distractions and dive into your reading.
#### 4. Always Have a Book Handy
Keep a book on you at all times. Whether during a bathroom break (a couple of pages), lunch (perhaps a chapter), or your morning commute, utilize every opportunity to read. If I enjoy a particular book, I often get the audio version too, so I can listen while cooking, washing dishes, or even relaxing in the bath.
#### 5. Allocate Time for Reading
I commit to a specific “book out” time each day. When you choose to read is entirely up to you; for many book lovers, reading is an essential part of their bedtime ritual. I aim for 45 minutes of reading daily. Coupled with additional moments (like breaks or during meals), I typically spend around 90 to 120 minutes each day immersed in books. Finding time becomes easier when you connect reading to existing habits, like your morning coffee.
I didn’t start with lengthy reading sessions; I gradually built up my time over the years. As they say, the grass is greener where you choose to nurture it.
In Conclusion
If you wish to read more, stop making excuses and start reading—even if it’s just for a minute each day. Every habit has to start somewhere, and with books, it begins the moment you open one. I’d love to hear how you progress in increasing your annual reading count!
You can do this—best of luck!
