Navigating Motherhood and Academia: My Journey in Tech

Chapter 1: Balancing Life as a Tech Mom
Recently, I've received numerous inquiries from inspiring women curious about how I manage my responsibilities as an AI researcher, a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science at Howard University, a Technologist, a wife, and a mother of four wonderful children while living in beautiful Kigali, Rwanda since May 2022.
The tech landscape can be particularly daunting, especially for young mothers. Despite facing challenges like self-doubt and being underestimated, your strength and determination shine brightly. Here are some strategies I've gathered throughout my academic and professional journey, which have helped me navigate through an MSc in Computer Science, secure research publications in prominent AI and tech forums, and complete four internships at renowned companies like Intel, Amazon, Bloomberg, and Apple.
These guiding principles have been invaluable to me:
- Take Your Time: ⏳ It's perfectly acceptable to progress at your own pace. I embarked on my master's program when my eldest was just six months old and completed it over five years. During this period, I interned at top companies, published a research paper, and led my research teams to three competition victories. I managed to finish my master's while raising two children and expecting my third.
- Create a Supportive Network: 👩👧👦 The journey of a tech mom can sometimes feel isolating and overwhelming. You're constantly balancing family, school, Ph.D. research, and work. It's essential to surround yourself with individuals who are equally passionate about personal growth. Establishing a community and support network is vital.
- Follow Your Passion Without Regret: 💼 It’s common to experience guilt when you need to decide whether to travel for a conference or internship, especially when it involves your children. Remember, whatever choice you make, you're serving as a remarkable role model for your kids. You're not just a mom; you're a person dedicated to your passions, and your children will respect and admire you for that.
- Master the Art of Organization: 🗓️ Effective planning is crucial. Whether it’s preparing meals in advance or organizing your daily schedule, staying organized will help you manage your time effectively. Don't forget to include exercise, fun, family bonding, and personal time in your plans.
- Make the Most of Your Time: ♻️ Time is invaluable. Transform every class assignment into a potential publication. Emphasize efficient methods to tackle tasks. In the kitchen, consider investing in versatile tools and a good freezer—these can be lifesavers.
- Embrace Your Power as a Mother: 🚫 Motherhood should not be seen as a barrier; it’s a unique strength. Don't allow anything to deter you from chasing your most ambitious aspirations. One day, when my daughter grows up, I’ll share with her how I managed to intern in Chandler, Arizona while caring for her and her brother, who were just 2 years and 7 months old in 2018. I’ll recount how I completed my Amazon internship while six months pregnant with my third child, and how I navigated my Bloomberg apprenticeship during a global pandemic, all while managing my final year of master's studies, remote learning with my preschoolers, and being a new mom. I’ll proudly share how I excelled in my interviews and Apple internship despite the significant time difference with most recruiters and interviewers. 👸🏽👩🏽💻🥳
Your journey may present its own unique challenges, but it's your resolve that will propel you forward.
You've got this, momma! 🚀💪
