Navigating the Haunting Silence: The Struggles of Ghosting

Chapter 1: The Nature of Ghosting
Ghosting, a term often used in social interactions, refers to the act of disappearing from someone's life without explanation. While the term may sound light-hearted, the reality can be quite serious.
I have countless thoughts I wish to share with my loved ones—most of which are positive. Yet, I often resort to giving them the silent treatment instead.
I recognize that this behavior can be rude and inconsiderate, but I find it difficult to engage directly. Perhaps it's just a matter of cowardice on my part. People frequently advise, "Just talk it out; express yourself. Don't be inconsiderate." I’ve made attempts, but while I can manage external situations, controlling my own responses proves challenging.
For instance, I can initiate a phone call, but once the other person answers, the words elude me. It’s akin to one of those distressing dreams where you’re trying to speak but nothing comes out—your mouth moves, but silence prevails. Your mind may be alert during those REM cycles, yet your voice seems to have vanished.
To those of us who often ghost, this is a familiar sensation.
My friends often hang up and declare, "I've been ghosted!" as if it’s a deliberate choice. Have they considered how challenging it might be to walk in my shoes, or rather, my ghostly sheet? It’s not as straightforward as they assume. The concept of privilege is often invisible to those who possess it.
I might attempt to write a letter, but what return address should I use? And let’s face it, ghosts don’t carry cash. Is it morally acceptable to "borrow" a few stamps from the post office to send it? They say stealing is wrong under any circumstance, and perhaps they have a point. Additionally, my handwriting is atrocious. Typing my feelings seems like a better option, but my friends monopolize the computer at all hours.
In the absence of dialogue, my only means of gaining attention is through clattering dishes, dropping shoes, or making ruckus—behaviors that remind me of two-year-olds. However, my noisy antics either annoy people or are dismissed with a chuckle: "It’s just the cat… or maybe our ghost." This reaction frustrates me. So, I become a source of amusement, do I? To retaliate, I might drain their freshly brewed coffee as a form of payback—though I genuinely savor the taste. Label my actions passive-aggressive if you wish, but I simply have a deep appreciation for coffee.
Despite my reluctance to behave this way, I feel trapped in this cycle. Not even therapy can seem to alter my behavior.
"Communication is essential!" therapists often proclaim.
Yet, I counter with, "Silence is golden."
