Mastering the Art of Speedy Article Publication: 6 Key Secrets
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to Efficient Publishing
When I first took on the role of editor at The Orange Journal, I found myself offering extensive, unpaid advice to writers, often dedicating up to 20 minutes on each submission. It was a learning experience, albeit a challenging one. To improve efficiency, I started compiling a collection of resources for writers, ranging from basic tasks like image insertion to more complex topics such as crafting effective subtitles and adhering to formatting standards.
As the influx of submissions grew, I realized I needed to establish boundaries. These boundaries evolved over time, and while I faced criticism, it was a necessary step to maintain efficiency. One individual even sent me a lengthy message on LinkedIn, requesting a call to discuss improving the writer experience. Such situations were eye-opening, but I learned to navigate them.

Section 1.1: Adhering to Guidelines
Writers Who Ignore Instructions Face Consequences
Many aspiring contributors to The Orange Journal initiate their journey by commenting on my article. I instruct them to include their Medium handle, but surprisingly, some neglect to do so. As a result, their submissions are overlooked. While it may seem harsh, there are rules in place. If someone cannot follow simple instructions, they are unlikely to thrive within TOJ.
Repeated Submissions of Published Work Lead to Removal
I can't stress enough that TOJ only accepts drafts. This message has been reiterated countless times across various articles. If a new writer takes the time to read the resources I provide, they would know this. Unfortunately, I no longer send courtesy reminders; if someone submits a published article, it will be removed from the queue, and repeat offenders will be banned from contributing.
Preparation is Key Before Submission
Familiarizing oneself with the formatting guidelines, which take a mere twelve minutes to read, is crucial. Many writers aim to make some side income and desire more, yet they overlook the wealth of free resources available. Tools like Grammarly are accessible and essential. Submitting drafts with numerous typos is unacceptable. If a writer demonstrates a lack of effort in reviewing their work, it raises red flags.
First Impressions Matter
During the review process, I intentionally do not look at the author's name until I've assessed the content. I often open multiple drafts to optimize my time. However, if a writer submits poorly formatted drafts—such as those lacking images, subtitles, or containing overwhelming blocks of text—they leave a negative first impression. Consequently, I may prioritize other submissions.
A Touch of Kindness Goes a Long Way
Few writers take the time to send a brief note of appreciation. A simple message like, "Thank you for considering my piece!" can make a difference. Those who express gratitude often see their work published more quickly. Initially, I reviewed submissions in a strict order, but given the volume of submissions, I now prioritize pieces from those who engage positively.
Bonus Tip 6: Avoid Shortcuts
Editors are not naive. I occasionally receive emails from writers requesting urgent attention to their submissions. Such requests leave me puzzled and usually lead to deletion. The proper channels for submission should be followed. My email is designated for freelance projects, not for managing Medium-related inquiries. My time is precious, and I cannot afford to stretch myself thin.
As I continue to grow in this role, I’ve learned to accept that not everyone will appreciate my approach. Some may label me harshly, but I believe in the value of hard work. Shortcuts might yield temporary success, but they are not sustainable.
If you want to increase your chances of getting published swiftly, consider applying these principles. You'll be amazed at the results.
