The Impact of the Superformula: Transforming Our World Today

Written on

Dr. Johan Gielis, a remarkable figure from Flanders, sat down with me in the quaint Dutch village of Geldrop prior to our ESG projects in Greece. Our conversation touched on various topics, from the robust roots of bamboo in agroforestry to the potential of healthy structures and immersive virtual realities.

We discussed the role of technology as a facilitator rather than a barrier, and we delved deeply into the power of imagination. It is only through envisioning possibilities that we can bring them to life. We referenced an insightful interview featuring the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman, where I marveled at his blend of brilliance and simplicity.

I pondered whether Einstein shared this same essence. Despite my own challenges, including the aftermath of chemotherapy, I feel a renewed clarity in my thoughts.

The term "polymath" originated in the early 17th century, combining the Greek words for "much" and "learn." In this context, Johan has become a modern-day Einstein for me, enriching my understanding across personal, philosophical, and scientific dimensions. His insights on generalizations will undoubtedly transform our comprehension of the world.

The Superformula

However, this narrative is not merely about us; it concerns the profound shifts in human comprehension regarding processes and systems. It encompasses the creation of healthier environments—be it cities or villages—and our responses to climate change.

The Superformula, introduced by Professor Johan Gielis 25 years ago, is redefining fields like complexity, entropy, quantum physics, engineering, and more.

> “In 2003, he was invited to submit a Special Paper to the American Journal of Botany; ‘A generic geometric transformation that unifies a wide range of natural and abstract shapes’ now lies in the top 2% of most cited scientific papers of all time.”

To grasp the significance of the Superformula, I encourage you to delve into this article, which offers a glimpse into the scientific transformations shaping our era. Biomimicry has emerged as the leading innovation method globally, as we have previously prioritized physics over biology and ecology.

Now, we are collectively striving to improve our approaches, especially as we face the urgent need for redesign in our environments in light of climate change.

Highlights of the Superformula

Allow me to distill the essence of the Superformula: it is a revolutionary equation that encapsulates all natural shapes. It facilitates the merging of various forms, revealing that nature often favors complex structures over simple circles and spirals.

> “This single equation, a generalization of circles and the Pythagorean Theorem, unifies an extensive range of both natural and abstract shapes.”

Nature is dynamic, constantly evolving in response to its surroundings. We understand that form follows function and flow. Recall how Newton categorized colors, confining them within strict boundaries, while Goethe approached color from a quantum perspective, acknowledging the limitations of human perception.

The Simplest Explanation

What can I offer as the simplest explanation?

> Imagine a hole. Inflate it. The outer edge expands, becoming flexible—an elastic structure capable of assuming various shapes, merging seamlessly with its environment.

We recognize five fundamental elements: earth, water, air, fire, and ether. The Superformula demonstrates that all entities are interconnected—each of us, every species, and all complex systems like mountains and oceans.

We engage with the world through our senses, and some even assert we possess 32 senses. For simplicity, I focus on the five senses, along with our skin and aura. Nikola Tesla famously stated:

> “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.”

The Superformula is not a catch-all theory as some have suggested; instead, it reveals the patterns in nature that we can map. Johan Gielis is collaborating with a diverse team of mathematicians and scientists to develop new dynamic formulas, including those that explore sound and the interconnectedness of all things.

Quantum Gravity and Dynamics

The understanding of quantum gravity and its dynamics paves the way for fresh insights into our economies, societies, and urban environments. As we hurtle through the universe at incredible speeds, we recognize our smallness yet vast potential.

Despite feeling anchored to the earth by gravity, this motion may influence our spiritual experiences, giving rise to narratives and beliefs that shape our existence.

We are storytellers by nature, and while stories offer comfort, they can also constrain us, particularly when we doubt our capabilities.

You now have insight into GIELIS transformations—Geometric (or Generalized) Intrinsic and Extrinsic Lengths in Submanifolds—connecting Johan Gielis with the legacy of Kepler, awaiting his own Newton.

> “In May 2003, after publication of the original paper, the American Mathematical Society reviewed Gielis’ work, likening him to ‘A botanical Kepler awaiting his Newton,’ highlighting the high expectations set by his findings.”

Science progresses gradually, and Gielis continues to seek his Newton. Might you be that pivotal figure to unveil dynamic solutions in quantum physics?

Real-World Applications

If you're feeling overwhelmed by this information, you're not alone; I felt similarly at first. However, my intuition nudged me to pursue this knowledge further. With Johan's guidance, I began to connect the dots.

My advice to you: Seek out generalizations, watch the videos provided, and relate this information to your existing knowledge.

After 25 years, the applications of the Superformula are extensive. Here are a few that particularly inspire hope for a better future:

#### 1. Healthy Buildings

I've been involved in promoting healthy building designs for years, focusing on indoor climates, especially given that we spend most of our lives indoors. Pollutants indoors can be significantly more concentrated than outside, which raises concerns for future generations.

The work of LAVA Architects in Germany exemplifies innovation in transforming existing buildings into healthier spaces using just two membranes for indoor and outdoor environments.

#### 2. Neuroscience

During my battle with aggressive breast cancer, I found support through neuroscientists who helped me tap into my inner strength. Health isn't merely the absence of illness; it's the resilience to navigate life's challenges.

Dr. Jean-Luc Mommaerts and the Aurelis App utilize the Superformula in their work. By exploring our inner voids through meditation and sleep, we connect with the planet's collective wisdom and our intrinsic strength.

#### 3-4-5. VR, Gaming, and Immersive Art

The Superformula also plays a crucial role in optimizing data transfers, reducing energy consumption dramatically. It underpins many VR, light, and sound applications, positioning itself at the forefront of technological innovation.
