Exploring the Ideal Keyboard for Writers: My Journey

Chapter 1: Introduction to My Keyboard Journey
Throughout my writing endeavors, I've had the pleasure of using two remarkable laptop keyboards. However, there's a twist...

For a long time, I've been an advocate for the Pixelbook Go (PBG) due to its incredible hush keyboard. Despite my enthusiasm, I found its software support lacking, which ultimately led me to purchase an M1 MacBook Air. This device offers all the software I require and more, along with an impressive keyboard.
Transitioning to the Magic Keyboard on the MBA took some adjustment after my experience with the PBG. Its clicky feedback offered a different feel, but after a couple of weeks, I grew to appreciate this keyboard’s responsiveness and comfort, allowing for a high typing accuracy.
However, I am acutely aware of the toll that age and poor posture take on my back. My current workspace setup is not the most ergonomic; I often find myself typing on my lap while lounging on the sofa, which only exacerbates the issue.
Chapter 2: The Search for a Better Setup
A rising trend among tech enthusiasts is the advocacy for mechanical keyboards. Until I began re-evaluating my own desktop arrangement, I paid little attention to this trend. To alleviate my back pain, I plan to invest in a laptop stand, which should help improve my posture.
Yet, addressing one issue often brings forth new challenges. Using a stand for my M1 MacBook Air means I’ll require an external keyboard. Additionally, my portable monitor will also need to be elevated. This brings up the necessity for a mouse or trackpad, as accessing the MBA's excellent trackpad will be impossible while it’s on the stand.
Naturally, I considered purchasing the Apple Magic Keyboard and mouse. However, I found myself diving deep into the world of mechanical keyboards on Reddit. Keychron's offerings have particularly caught my eye. I'm intrigued by terms like ‘hot swappable’ and the various switch types—Brown, Red, and Blue—that significantly influence the typing experience.
Section 2.1: My Choices
Making changes to my setup isn’t inexpensive. I spent time contemplating the right stands (both for my laptop and portable monitor). Ultimately, I decided on the THINGY CLUB 2 IN 1 DUAL ARM TABLET & LAPTOP MOUNT, as it efficiently clamps to my desk and features extendable, movable arms.
In terms of keyboards, I opted for the Keychron K2 V2 model. Its compact design aligns with my desired aesthetic, and I selected brown switches based on my research. Additionally, I’ve purchased a wrist rest and a basic wireless mouse for the time being, with plans to upgrade to the Apple Magic Trackpad in the near future. I enjoy gesture controls and anticipate adjusting back to a standard mouse after using the MBA's exceptional trackpad.

Section 2.2: Final Thoughts
Once I’ve had the chance to test out both the keyboard and the stand, I plan to provide a review. I hope these additions will enhance my comfort while working. Following this, I’ll be on the lookout for a trackpad and an ergonomic chair. The pursuit of an ideal desk setup is a popular topic, often showcased on social media. While it requires a financial commitment, I’m optimistic about the benefits my investments will yield.
