Healing at the Hot Springs: A Journey of Faith and Restoration

Chapter 1: Setting Out for Healing
In my previous entry, I shared a heartfelt experience at Pismo Beach, where I expressed my faith through music. It was a fulfilling moment despite mixed reactions. As I prepared for a new adventure the following day, I looked forward to visiting the Avila Hot Springs.
The night before our trip was somewhat chaotic; both my girlfriend and I realized we had forgotten our swimsuits. In a last-minute rush, we dashed to the nearest Ross Department Store, conveniently located near our hotel. Although my girlfriend couldn’t find a suit, I was fortunate to discover one that fit perfectly. Despite missing out on the hotel hot tub, we were all set for our excursion.
After a lovely continental breakfast, we took our time but finally arrived at Avila Hot Springs. I had fond memories of visiting Avila Beach in warmer weather, particularly when Pismo Beach felt too chilly. However, I had never been aware of the existence of hot springs in Avila, so this was bound to be a new experience. While there are numerous hot springs across the country, this one is the closest to the Central Coast. It is believed that the warmth and mineral content of hot springs promote healing, and I was eager to see if these waters could help alleviate my blindness.
As we approached, the distinctive scent of sulfur filled the air. While I wasn’t certain of all the minerals present, the sulfur was unmistakable. The staff was incredibly accommodating, recognizing my visual impairment. One staff member kindly guided me into the pool, which was only a few feet deep, resembling a spa without jets. There was a ledge to sit on, but I found that sitting on the bottom provided a more profound experience, with the water reaching up to my neck.
We encountered a retired couple from Michigan, traveling across the country. They shared their experiences of visiting various hot springs, making this their first time at Avila. It was a refreshing contrast to the snowy climate back home, and they even recounted their visit to a hot spring in Alaska! It was delightful to share stories and connect with fellow travelers.
As I settled into the soothing water, I began to unwind and adapt to the heat. On a whim, I splashed some water over my closed eyelids. To my astonishment, the dark patches in my vision started to brighten. I began to perceive outlines, shapes, and even some colors—an indication that I might be experiencing a form of healing. However, I knew I couldn't stay submerged for more than 20 minutes, as prolonged exposure could raise my body temperature too high. Even after cooling off in the nearby pool, I could still feel the warmth lingering in my body.
Days have passed since my visit to Avila Hot Springs, and the effects lingered longer than I anticipated. I suspect that had I spent more time there, I might have experienced even greater improvement, but I had to return for my Thursday night worship team practice. I have no regrets about this trip, and I am aware of another hot spring closer to where I live in Springville. Could it also offer healing? It’s certainly a possibility. Yet, while I appreciate the potential benefits of the minerals and warmth, I believe that all credit should go to the Creator of nature, reminding us that it’s easy to overlook.
Previously, I had to take certain steps before I could receive healing. My discipline in reading the Bible isn’t as strong as I’d like, as I usually listen to it through an app or a handheld reader. Nevertheless, I’m grateful for the devotional emails I receive. Attending a weekly Bible study has also helped me maintain some discipline. My focus has been on music, as I work on worship songs, not just for church but for personal growth as well. This inspiration led me to the idea of "praising on the pier." Once I acquire the studio piano I desire for my living room, I hope to devote more time to creating original music. Although I have a dream related to healing that I could elaborate on, it would require a lengthy explanation.
For now, I cherish the healing I experienced, though it may seem minimal. It’s reassuring to know that claims about the healing properties of hot springs hold truth, and more importantly, it serves as a reminder that God has created such wonders to provide relief and healing to those in need.
