Finding Confidence Beyond Productivity: A Journey of Self-Worth

Chapter 1: The Fragile Foundation of Confidence
Six years ago, my life revolved around what I termed "work therapy"—gaining confidence through accomplishing tasks, mastering skills, and achieving financial independence. However, after leaving a job that once defined me, experiencing a significant relationship loss, and dealing with weight gain, my confidence plummeted.
What went wrong?
I realized my confidence was as unstable as sand. It hinged on professional achievements and the support of my partner. When both disappeared, I faced a critical choice: to believe I had no value or to recognize my intrinsic worth simply because I exist.
Despite the absence of a prestigious title or a partner, I came to understand that I still held value. Society often equates worth with productivity and social standing, but many individuals—like children, the elderly, and those with disabilities—contribute to the world without traditional productivity.
Even in nature, organisms like algae and moss, which seem inactive, play essential roles that often go unnoticed. Similarly, during winter, plants may appear dormant, yet they are preparing for growth.
This led me to ponder whether the same concept applies to humans. Life has its seasons, and there will be times when we feel less confident or inadequate. However, every phase of our journey serves a purpose.
In a world that prioritizes action and achievement, the importance of simply being often gets overlooked. Silence can be just as valuable as loudness, and a temporary decline in confidence does not diminish our inherent worth.
During transitions—whether due to grief, relationship changes, career shifts, financial struggles, midlife crises, or health issues—we often question our value.
I recall witnessing a family member navigate a similar career transition. He went from a high-responsibility role to a janitorial position, which significantly impacted his self-esteem. Yet, if we adopt a perspective aligned with nature, we can find serenity in the cycle of life.
Every phase has its purpose; darkness prepares us for light, and winter sets the stage for summer's bounty. When all sources of confidence are stripped away, it’s an opportunity to cultivate a new sense of confidence based solely on existence.
This process involves letting go of the need to achieve and earn our worth.
Reflecting on my garden from last year, we faced an unexpected rainstorm that threatened my young plants. Initially, I feared they wouldn’t survive, but to my surprise, they grew stronger in the aftermath. The storm served a purpose, just as challenges do in our lives.
Your struggles, like mine, are meaningful, even if their significance isn't immediately clear. Regardless of circumstances, your existence alone affords you value and purpose—this is a reason to embrace confidence.
I believe in your potential. ❤️
