Exploring the Enigmas of UFOs, Telepathy, and OBE Experiences

Understanding the Unexplained
In contemplating the mysteries of existence, I find myself particularly perplexed by three areas: (1) unidentified flying objects (UFOs); (2) the phenomenon of mental telepathy; and (3) out-of-body experiences (OBEs) or near-death experiences (NDEs). Despite having personal encounters with all three, I struggle to provide a coherent explanation. Unlike many who feel compelled to find a definitive answer, I believe that living with uncertainty has enhanced my observational skills (more on this in a future article).
UFO Sightings: A Personal Encounter
In 1975, while driving south on the Interstate 5 in California with my wife, Ofelia, we were en route to visit my ailing mother in San Diego. For reasons I cannot explain, I abruptly exited the freeway to take surface streets toward another highway, the I-15. Ofelia, confused, questioned my actions, to which I confidently replied, “I’m taking you to see the flight patterns.”
Not long after, we spotted an airfield on our left and, above a hangar, a UFO hovered at an angle of approximately 20 degrees. The craft had a rounded top, a flat base, and bore two shades of brown, complete with windows encircling its body. Intriguingly, we could see three individuals aboard: two men gesturing toward us and a woman, an elderly figure, walking past them, all wearing sunglasses. What an astonishing sight!
Beyond the craft, a control tower loomed, where two men seemed oblivious to the spectacle above them, focused instead on incoming aircraft. As if in slow motion, a man with a briefcase walked directly beneath the hovering craft, completely unaware of its presence. This bizarre tableau remained visible to us for some time, thanks to the freeway's curvature.
As we drove past, the craft adjusted its position, then, in a silent flash, ascended out of sight in under three seconds.
Years later, my brother Bill, while visiting a former Operation Blue Book scientist in Fort Worth, Texas, asked me to recount my UFO sighting. When I mentioned my intent to show Ofelia “the flight patterns,” it struck me as absurd. The scientist revealed that those were the identical words used by eight other witnesses at that moment. They, too, had reported driving to that precise location to see “the flight patterns.” To this day, nearly 50 years later, I have no further information about that event, which remains one of the most haunting mysteries of my life.
Experiencing the Unexplainable
What transpired during that sighting? I have no answers. The only certainty is that it happened. Thankfully, Ofelia was with me, as otherwise, I would have been dismissed as a liar or a lunatic, much like my friend Rick, who found my account unbelievable. He firmly believed that what I described could not have occurred, demonstrating a perfect example of self-imposed ignorance.
This kind of ignorance has nothing to do with intelligence but rather stems from arrogance. I recall a family member, a valedictorian, who could also be incredibly naïve (for instance, she believed the film "Reefer Madness" was a documentary).
Another baffling experience took place in 1960 when I was hospitalized with diphtheria, suffering from an extremely high fever. On the eighth day of my illness, I floated above my hospital bed, observing a medical team attempting to revive a corpse. I felt calm and detached, even as I approached a bright light. Suddenly, an invisible force pulled me back toward the body, and I found myself looking up at the doctor just as she plunged a needle into my chest. Miraculously, I revived and broke the fever.
I still cannot explain how any of this occurred, but it was undeniably real. I witnessed everything in real time, including the back of the nurse’s head.
Telepathy: Unfathomable Connections
I have also experienced several instances of what seemed like telepathic communication with various individuals throughout my life, including my brother and a fellow student. Let me clarify that I do not subscribe to supernatural beliefs; I see events on Earth as part of a natural process.
For instance, in 1954, my identical twin brother Bill and I were adolescents living in Rialto, California. One night, I woke up knowing that Bill was in trouble. I opened the front door just as a police officer was about to ring the bell, having caught Bill peeking through a neighbor’s window.
Another notable instance occurred in 1971 while I was in Mexico for a summer Spanish course. After running out of money, I focused intently on my brother, hoping he would call. After about 20 minutes, the phone rang, and it was Bill, ready to wire me funds.
Yet another incident took place in 1969 when a classmate named Susan appeared at my bedside, informing me that her mother was dying. I later learned that her mother passed away at exactly the same moment.
The last experience I’ll mention occurred on October 28, 2019. I felt a profound emptiness, signaling the death of my twin brother Bill. We had shared a deep connection throughout our lives, and the sudden absence of that bond was chilling.
While I do not consider these experiences to be supernatural, they raise questions about the nature of reality. I hope that one day we can better understand such phenomena, allowing those of us who experience them to share openly without fear of ridicule.
In conclusion, I believe in science as a process for understanding our world—not as a collection of knowledge, but as a method for inquiry. That, along with my family, is what I hold dear.
If you found this exploration engaging, please give it the recognition you feel it deserves. My next article is intended to examine the distinctions between political ideologies, though I acknowledge that plans may change.
Meanwhile, I wish you all the best during this exceptionally cool spring. Thank you for your time. Ciao.
