Exploring Pinch Points: A Guide for Writers on Story Structure

Chapter 1: Understanding Pinch Points
In the realm of writing, there are concepts that can seem puzzling to those not immersed in the craft. One such concept is "pinch points." This podcast episode serves as the beginning of a series dedicated to exploring pinch points, with additional insights available on our Substack, LIVING HAPPY, under the WRITE BETTER NOW publication.
What exactly are these intriguing elements known as pinch points? They are crucial moments in a narrative that help maintain reader engagement by heightening tension. Think of them as the moments when you invite the reader back into the story, reminding them of the stakes involved for the protagonist.
Pinch points are instances where the main character faces challenges, often creating discomfort or conflict. As noted by Writing Mastery, these moments re-ignite tension that may have subsided, reminding readers of the central conflict and its implications for the characters. Without these critical stakes, readers can quickly lose interest; thus, strategically placed pinch points are essential to keep the narrative lively.
In the conventional Three-Act Structure, the first act lays out characters, setting, and conflict, while the third act brings resolution. The second act, often the longest, contains escalating action, punctuated by pinch points that instill urgency and propel the story onward.
Section 1.1: Distinguishing Pinch Points from Plot Points
It's vital to understand that pinch points are distinct from plot points. While both terms contain the letter "P," they serve different functions. Plot points are events that move the story along and connect different narrative elements, preventing it from feeling episodic.
In contrast, pinch points:
- Elevate stakes or intensify conflict.
- Create obstacles for the protagonist, often highlighting the antagonist's role.
- Foster curiosity and concern in the reader, encouraging them to continue.
- Reveal the true nature of our heroes under pressure.
As highlighted by Writers Helping Writers, novice writers often focus on the Hook, Midpoint, and climax. However, without well-positioned pinch points, the story risks losing its sense of tension and conflict. Pinch points illustrate the opposition faced by the protagonist and underscore the stakes involved, fostering emotional growth in the hero as they react to these new challenges.
Tomorrow, I'll delve into where to place these essential elements in your narrative.

COOL EXERCISE
Consider the antagonist in your story. Now jot down:
- Their quirks or peculiarities.
- Items they might purchase at a grocery store.
- Purchases they would make at Wal-Mart.
- Strategies they could employ to complicate things for the hero while easing their own path.
