In recent times, my husband and I have embarked on a journey into intermittent fasting, and the reasons for our decision are quite apparent. Aging is an undeniable process, and I found myself struggling with a few stubborn pounds that seemed impossible to lose. While these extra pounds weren't life-threatening, they certainly affected my self-esteem. Additionally, my daughter has a quirky habit of affectionately rubbing my belly, a remnant from when I nursed her, making me even more conscious of my appearance.

My motivation may have started on a superficial level, but the health benefits of fasting are quite remarkable! There are various methods of intermittent fasting, and what initially sparked our interest was a completely unrelated topic. I had downloaded an app called Moonly, which provides insights into astrology and horoscopes, along with daily runes and numerous other intriguing features worth exploring.

Within the app, I kept encountering references to something known as the Ekadashi fast, which occurs every 11th and 26th day of the lunar calendar. These days are considered significant in Hindu tradition due to their association with Lord Vishnu. Although my family identifies as Roman Catholic and I was not raised with a strong emphasis on religion, I was aware that many cultures incorporate fasting into their practices.

According to the app, those participating in Ekadashi can drink water and consume fruits if they are just beginning their fasting journey. Various popular methods of intermittent fasting are detailed by Healthline, including:

  • The 16/8 Method: Also known as the Leangains protocol, this method involves skipping breakfast and limiting your eating window to 8 hours, such as from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., while fasting for the remaining 16 hours.
  • Eat-Stop-Eat: This approach entails fasting for a full 24 hours once or twice a week, such as not eating from dinner one day until dinner the following day.
  • The 5:2 Diet: This method allows for normal eating for five days of the week, while restricting calorie intake to 500-600 calories on two non-consecutive days.

My husband and I opted for the eat-stop-eat approach, which suits our lifestyle as former restaurant workers who are accustomed to long hours without food. Fasting has become a routine for us, typically on Thursdays when my mother-in-law watches the kids, allowing me to work uninterrupted.

Despite our efforts, I admit to having eaten a banana this morning—old habits can be hard to break, especially when my brain forgets our fasting routine. We do, however, enjoy our morning coffee and afternoon tea, although we avoid adding milk and sugar, as some fasting regimens recommend.

What physiological changes occur during intermittent fasting? While I’m not a medical professional, it’s essential to consult one before starting any new diet. Women, in particular, may experience different side effects due to factors like menstruation and nursing. Healthline outlines several significant changes that take place in the body during fasting, including:

  • Human Growth Hormone (HGH): Levels can increase dramatically, aiding in fat loss and muscle growth.
  • Insulin: Fasting improves insulin sensitivity and lowers insulin levels, making it easier for the body to access stored fat.
  • Cellular Repair: Fasting activates cellular repair processes, including autophagy, which helps eliminate old and dysfunctional proteins.
  • Gene Expression: Changes occur in gene functions related to longevity and disease resistance.

Chapter 3: Beyond Weight Loss: A Holistic Approach

While weight loss and health benefits are critical motivators for us, there’s more to our journey. We aren't health experts by any means but rather individuals striving for a better life. We’ve transitioned from a lifestyle filled with unhealthy habits to one focused on personal growth and entrepreneurship.

Intermittent fasting has become an integral part of our approach to achieving a more disciplined mindset. Inspired by figures like Tony Robbins, who emphasizes the importance of mental fortitude, we’ve adopted new habits that support our entrepreneurial goals. We’ve replaced destructive behaviors with healthier ones, all in pursuit of becoming the best versions of ourselves for our family and community.

Moreover, intermittent fasting has practical benefits, such as reducing grocery expenses—a significant consideration for any budding entrepreneur.
