# The Evolving Landscape of IT Work: Challenges and Insights

Chapter 1: Understanding the Current IT Work Environment
In today's fast-paced IT landscape, my role involves data analytics and user-acceptance testing, along with providing essential requirements to IT teams. However, the agile methodologies we rely on have become less effective, and the concept of DevOps is struggling with genuine collaboration.
The tech industry is experiencing a significant talent shortage, leading many developers to seek opportunities that promise better financial rewards. While I can understand the appeal of higher salaries, I sometimes ponder whether a transition from analytics to development might be beneficial. Nevertheless, I've found the stress associated with development work daunting, especially when attempting to create something independently.
Here’s an article I wrote about my experience creating a data lake for data-driven investing, detailing the challenges I encountered:
Chapter 2: Key Challenges in the IT Sector
As I reflect on my recent experiences collaborating with IT teams, I've identified three notable challenges that leave me uncertain about potential solutions.
Section 2.1: The Ever-Growing Backlog
Recently, there's been a noticeable trend of IT professionals rapidly changing jobs, accompanied by a surge in job openings. One of my primary concerns is the overwhelming backlog of tasks that hampers both ongoing and future projects, which can quickly diminish stakeholder enthusiasm.
While I’m not a developer and cannot address the backlog directly, I can prioritize tasks and analyze the current workload. Increasing salaries and benefits might attract talent, but it could lead to a bidding war among companies, potentially resulting in budget cuts that threaten my position. Ideally, training existing staff in development could alleviate some pressure, but I currently lack that opportunity.
Section 2.2: The Return to Silos
DevOps aims to foster teamwork in software development. However, staffing shortages often lead to reliance on questionable sources for quick answers. I empathize with my business analyst colleagues, who juggle numerous responsibilities without the luxury of delegation. This often pushes them to seek immediate solutions from their immediate team, as meetings can be time-consuming and unproductive.
Interestingly, I once viewed meetings as unnecessary, but I've come to recognize their importance for gathering critical information. While better organization could help analysts manage their time, the reality is that one person can only do so much before facing burnout. Delegation is essential for sustaining productivity.
Section 2.3: The Breakdown of Stories and Epics
Onboarding new staff presents its own set of challenges, particularly in grasping complex requirements. This difficulty stems not from a lack of problem-solving skills, but rather from the need for corporate context, which is accumulated over time. Understanding the context allows team members to distinguish between stories and epics effectively.
I admit to occasionally requesting tasks that are unrealistic within a one-week timeframe. Sometimes, what I perceive as a story may actually be an epic. The challenge for analysts is to continuously identify areas for improvement without settling for a minimal viable product. As scope creep expands, it raises the question: how can newcomers navigate their tasks amidst shifting expectations?
Conclusions
Navigating the role of a product owner in IT projects is increasingly challenging, especially in light of the evolving work environment and the pressing need for companies to enhance their IT capabilities. While the current situation may seem frustrating, it's essential to remember that every challenge is magnified in a resource-constrained setting. Perhaps one day, we will see a return to a more robust IT workforce.
