Essential Mac Applications for Enhanced Productivity
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to My Top Apps
After sharing my favorite applications for the iPhone, I felt compelled to discuss the most frequently used apps on my MacBook. My device is an older model, a MacBook Pro from early 2015, equipped with an Intel Core i5 processor and 8GB of RAM. While the battery life has diminished over time, its performance remains commendable and continues to meet my needs effectively.
It's important to note that the applications I’m highlighting today reflect my current usage. The world of apps is dynamic, and I firmly believe that switching apps without purpose can hinder productivity. However, I’m open to change if I find better options or if my current apps no longer serve their intended functions. I also don’t mind investing in applications; I believe that ongoing support and development warrant fair compensation, even if it involves a subscription model.
Section 1.1: Email Management
For email, I rely on Spark Mail, which I also use on my iPhone. This app is completely free and integrates seamlessly with various other tools such as Apple Reminders, Todoist, Google Drive, Pocket, and countless others. Despite being free, I would gladly contribute something toward its development.
Section 1.2: Browsing Experience
When it comes to web browsing, I prefer Google Chrome. While it can be resource-intensive at times, its stability makes it my go-to choice for both professional and personal use. Although I experimented with Safari, I found it didn’t suit my needs. Chrome’s extensions enhance its functionality, making it indispensable in my daily routine.
Section 1.3: Task Management
For managing tasks, I turn to Todoist. This app is unparalleled in its capabilities, especially with the recent updates enhancing the task view. Although I briefly tried Apple Reminders, I soon returned to Todoist due to its intuitive interface and powerful filters that allow me to customize my views effectively.
Section 1.4: Online Security
In a previous article about my iPhone apps, I mentioned LastPass. However, I have since transitioned entirely to 1Password. I was dissatisfied with LastPass's recent changes regarding device usage and found 1Password's latest version, 8, to be both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional. If you're in need of a password manager, I highly recommend it; having one is essential in today's digital age.
Section 1.5: Note-Taking Solutions
I use a combination of Apple Notes and Drafts for note-taking. Drafts has been a staple in my workflow for years, and I've recently increased my usage by implementing shortcuts that streamline my process. For a deeper dive into Drafts, check out my previous article.
Section 1.6: Enhancing Productivity with Alfred
Alfred is an incredible tool for optimizing workflows and improving efficiency. It’s somewhat difficult to describe since it operates in the background, activated by CMD+Space (which I’ve set to replace Spotlight search). It allows me to execute various commands, search, and run workflows seamlessly.
Section 1.7: Calendar Management with Fantastical 2
Fantastical 2 is perhaps my favorite application. While it serves as a calendar, its design and functionality are outstanding, making it effortless to manage my time and tasks. I’ve integrated it with Todoist, allowing all my tasks to be displayed in one location. After nearly six years of use, Fantastical continues to evolve, and despite being the most expensive app in my collection, it’s worth every cent.
Chapter 2: Conclusion
These are my current top applications. As I glance at my dock, I see others like Messages, Music, Shortcuts, and Day One (though I seldom use my laptop for journaling). The apps mentioned above are my daily essentials. This piece was inspired by a similar article from Dominic DiFrancesco. Thank you for reading!
