Five Simple Habits to Energize Your Day and Boost Happiness
Written on
Chapter 1: The Power of Small Habits
We often overlook how our daily happiness and well-being stem from our consistent habits. It's not about our personality traits or what we're born with; rather, it reflects what we do repeatedly.
Adopting small, manageable habits can lead to significant improvements in our lives. Not only do these habits energize us, but they also lay the groundwork for more meaningful changes that elevate our quality of life.
Section 1.1: Quick Physical Boosts
Twelve Squats or Equivalent
I’ve started incorporating twelve quick squats between my writing and work sessions throughout the day. This simple exercise is fast and easy, making it a habit I can easily maintain. While it may not transform me into a Greek god overnight, it significantly enhances my productivity during writing sessions. Plus, it fosters a mindset geared toward ongoing exercise, encouraging me to adopt additional positive habits.
Three Slow, Shallow Belly Breaths
Breathing should be slow and shallow to promote calmness. Taking deep gulps can lead to excessive CO2 intake, which is not ideal. By slowing down, you ensure a steady influx of oxygen. As noted in "The Oxygen Advantage," shallow nose breathing is both underrated and incredibly effective. This technique activates your parasympathetic nervous system, helping you relax and invigorate your cells with oxygen. Whenever you're feeling anxious or need a quick energy boost, this method works wonders.
Section 1.2: Hydration and Laughter
Drink a Glass of Water
Many of us often blame various issues for feeling lethargic or moody. However, a simple glass of water can frequently revive our energy. Instead of reaching for another snack, consider drinking water to quench your thirst and stave off hunger.
Enjoy Some Comedy
Take a break and watch a comedy clip featuring Seinfeld, Kevin Hart, or Mr. Bean. Even if you have to force a laugh at first, humor can quickly uplift your mood. Just as a forced smile can alter your emotional state, laughter has the same effect, positively impacting your biochemical balance in just a few minutes.
Tackle a Quick Chore
There’s always something that needs attention around the house. Choose one task you can complete in five minutes, whether it’s cleaning the kitchen sink or making your bed. This approach helps you take action and fosters a sense of responsibility, providing an instant energy boost and satisfaction.
