Finding Ease in Progress: A Fresh Perspective on Growth

Understanding the Nature of Progress

In my experience, progress is rarely a straightforward path, despite our hopes for it to be.

The Analogy of Growth

Imagine you have a lovely garden in your backyard that requires care. To maintain it, you need a hose for watering. Each day, you diligently go outside, although not always at the same time, to ensure your plants receive water. You want to see them thrive.

At times, you turn the hose on full blast, watching water spray everywhere. Other days, the pressure is low, and only a weak stream flows out. Regardless of the situation, there’s always a slight trickle, no matter how much you try to stop it.

This water symbolizes our progress.

Mapping the Analogy to Life

Admittedly, I’m no gardening expert, but I find a connection between this scenario and my personal journey. I believe I am constantly making strides toward my goals, even when facing challenges. Adversity can teach us valuable lessons about ourselves—what we dislike, what we want to avoid, and how resilient we can be.

During difficult times, I discover my determination. Although setbacks are inevitable and recovery takes time, each experience offers lessons.

Throughout my life, my journey has rarely been straightforward. I often wished for a direct correlation between my efforts and the results. I hoped my investments—whether in saving money, acquiring new skills, or improving my health—would yield predictable rewards.

As I’ve delved into activities like learning jiu jitsu over the past few years, I’ve faced moments of struggle. Some days, I feel utterly defeated, while other days, I am amazed at my progress. I can now perform moves that were impossible for me just a few months ago. The person I was when I first entered the gym would be astounded at my current abilities.

Progress is a journey filled with ups and downs. By accepting that obstacles are part of the process, we can mitigate frustration.

Remember to keep tending to your own garden. Pull out that hose and hope for a powerful flow. Even on days when progress feels minimal, remember that every drop counts.
