Chapter 1: The Power of Reflection
Upon my return to Twitter between 2017 and 2021, I was invited to contribute a succinct piece of wisdom—limited to 140 characters—at the beginning of a crucial weekly email update sent to the entire company. I engaged in this task for nearly a year until the format of the update evolved. Recently, I stumbled upon these reflections in my Medium drafts; although I don’t recall writing them, they would have otherwise faded into obscurity. Here they are, available for your perusal. Some may resonate, while others might elicit a cringe—it's for you to decide!
When everything feels chaotic and disjointed, focus on the positives. Identify the “bright spot” that stands out amidst the overwhelming negativity. By doing so, you can uncover solutions that might otherwise remain hidden.
Section 1.1: Embracing Our Uniqueness
We often recognize our own quirks while remaining oblivious to those of others. This can lead us to believe we are isolated in our eccentricities. Twitter has the unique ability to offer glimpses into the lives of strangers, reminding us that we are not alone in our peculiarities.
Subsection 1.1.1: Insights from the Tweep Tour
Section 1.2: Responsibility in Public Discourse
As we embark on our Tweep Tour through Singapore, Korea, and Japan, I have had the privilege of interviewing numerous Twitter employees. Consistently, I hear terms like family, openness, trust, and enjoyment in relation to our workplace culture. This sentiment is genuinely uplifting, and we are fortunate to experience it.

The first video explores the journey of David Chase and the impact of "The Sopranos." This iconic series reshaped television, showcasing the intricate world of mobsters through a lens of deep character development and storytelling.
The second video offers insights into the legacy of "The Sopranos," emphasizing how David Chase’s vision transformed the landscape of TV drama and influenced countless creators.
We are stewards of public dialogue. Thus, we hold a responsibility to nurture this conversation. While freedom of speech is a fundamental human right, the right to have that speech amplified by Twitter is not. This highlights the importance of adhering to our established guidelines.
Twitter is more than just a business; it is a service supported by a business model. This distinction is vital, as it underscores our purpose-driven nature. We are committed to facilitating public discourse, and one day, our operational framework will seamlessly align with and enhance our mission.
In a growing organization where roles become increasingly specialized, it’s natural for some to question whether their work positively impacts others. I wish I could bridge that gap for everyone. Rest assured, every effort you put forth is making a difference—enhancing lives in meaningful ways.
