Exploring Amazon's Innovative Hair Salon Concept

Written on

Chapter 1: Amazon Enters the Salon Scene

As I wrap up my final exams, I’m feeling energized and ready to dive into some intriguing developments.

In a bold move, Amazon is stepping into the hair salon industry with its first location in London. This innovative salon offers customers the chance to get a haircut while utilizing augmented reality to preview virtual hair colors before making a commitment. Additionally, their cashier-less technology allows customers to purchase products by simply scanning QR codes.

If this concept proves successful, Amazon could replicate this strategy globally, similar to how they have expanded AWS. Envision a future where Amazon sells salon franchises akin to McDonald's. They would provide the branding, technology, and perhaps even professional stylists trained at Amazon Salon University, while franchise owners would focus on attracting clients.

One major challenge of getting a haircut is the inconsistency in results. As someone who frequently relocates, I often rely on Google reviews to find nearby salons every few months. I explain my desired haircut to the stylist, yet I often leave with a look that differs significantly from what I envisioned.

Imagine if Amazon could guarantee uniformity in haircuts across all its franchises, regardless of location—even if you were in a different country. If you request a particular style, it would always look the same.

Interestingly, hair salons have long been considered recession-resistant businesses. People generally prioritize looking well-groomed and getting regular haircuts. However, the recent lockdowns prompted many individuals to invest in trimmers and attempt to cut their own hair. Some of my friends believe they can manage without visiting a salon due to the high costs associated with quality services. Yet, there are certain hairstyles that simply cannot be achieved with a trimmer.

In summary, hair salons remain a robust business model, and Amazon is keen to invest in essential services like groceries and healthcare.
